I have this lathe and have been very pleased with it. Only being small it does have its limitations to the size you can turn, but if you are happy turning small stuff then it is a great lathe. I only brought mine to do small things as I have a larger lathe for the bigger stuff. It has done everything that I have asked of it the only thing I will say is buy another tool rest as the one that comes with it is rather limited. I found the variable speed a bonus as my larger lathe does not have this. I tend to leave the belt on the middle pulley which covers most of my needs.

Whilst it is good to have the availability of turning larger pieces 90% of the work I do would fit on that lathe so you have no excuse for not turning out some beautiful masterpieces.

The largest I have turned on it is about 7" it handles that well the only reason I have not done anything bigger is that I have both lathes set up and just put the blank on whichever lathe is suitable. The Axminster will as you may know take a slightly larger one than what I have turned without any worries

Similar to Dalboy I have a large lathe (Record Maxi1) but brought a AWVSL second hand. I have got it set up with a pen mandrel and mainly use it for pen making. I have turned 6" bowls on it and it managed these with ease. I find it a cracking little lathe to use and have not had a single problem with it in the couple of years that I have been using it .

what is the best sort of chuck to buy for this lathe, not sure which one to get?
the things l would like to make are bowls, candle holders, pens that type of stuff so any advice would be appreciated and price of said chuck if that is possible

If it hasn't sold already there is a Record G3 with 8 x 1" thread listed earlier this evening in the for sale section. Great value - I've just bought one at £120 opr I'd have grabbed it.
