My prize for runner up in the Competition arrived this morning. A Phillyplane!! \:D/ \:D/ . One of the new smoothers. Its made from Goncalo Alves and looks and feels wonderful. I've not used it in anger yet.

Thanks very much Philly - very generous of you and thank you UK Workshop competition organisers, judges and voters.

I've posted this here to give Philly's work and generosity a bit more prominence but Mods if you think it should be in the Comp section then please move it.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Tim

It's beautiful Tim, but you forgot to show us the shavings? ;)

Come on Tim, shavings needed...I had me arm twisted to show them when I completed a woodie recently :) - Rob

Nice!!!!

That design is not dissimilar to my great grandfather's which is being passed down the generations. He used to be the master carpenter of the firm who apparently made all the traditional shop fronts for the retailers in Brum during the early part of the last century.

Will take a piccie and post it here at some stage

Maybe I'm being grumpy but I've never understood what the deal is with shavings?

The point is that it finishes the timber beautifully - I throw the shavings away.

Love the plane though Philly.

Cheers

go on, take a slice for us....

you know we want it....

just a thin one...

say it, go on, say those words....

let me hear you say, chipbreaker.....

mmmmm, I love the smell of shaving in the morning!

ps:- I don't get the shavings thing either, anyway, aren't wooden planes only for show???

You are so right!! I love the look, and feel, of whispy shavings but I throw them away as well. It's what they left behind that is important, isn't it?
Lovely plane, Philly.

Well done Tim (I'm not 100% certain but i think I voted for you :) )

And what a little beauty that plane is. Philly is fast building a reputation here, soon will be that people will be bidding for his planes like they do for some of Leonardos works.

And here it is:

Any observations and I'd be grateful from you hand tool plane experts. The straight edged blade is still rather sharp but the body has taken a battering from all the cousins "avin a go" when they shouldn't have!

And the plane maker/carpenter/owner Back row, left:

Interesting shape, K. Also the wedge is longer than the iron - guess it has seen a LOT of use?
Thanks for sharing,
Philly :D

I should get a picture of the wedge. The middle bit has been gouged out to leave two delicate runners for the tongue rebates
