I need to drill some pilot holes in some 4" timber - I will be drilling a 2" deep hole (around 10mm diameter) and the pilot hold needs to extend below that for the screw to start off in.

Any suggestions for 3-4mm drills which are more than 3" long - even if they are thicker at the top of strength?

Many thanks

Miles

Hi,

You can buy "long series" drills I have a 6mm that is 100mm long, Axminister do them or your local tool shop should be able to get hold of them.

we've got augers that can do that - you can buy them from axminster- problem is that long thin augers are very prone to breaking under any sideways pressure so you really need a pillar drill rather than trying to do it by hand

I saw some very long 6 mm hss drills in AHC[?] in Camberley. TT mght be as good as it gets, 3-4mm seems very thin

Miles I do not know what happened to the PM. I only said in it that I have loads of long drills - mostly orthopaedic drills - in 2.5, 3.2, 4.5 and 6mm diameter and up to 300mm long - you would be welcome to have one - I live in Eynsham between Witney and Oxford so you are not far away

I tried a long series 6mm twist drill last summer, in wood. Unfortunately it moved all over the place with the grain etc. In the end I used a 6mm spade bit. Dead straight over its maximum length.

I can only imagine that an even thinner bit would be more likely to drill almost anything other than straight.

For wood then a brad point beam drill would be good, I have a set 3-16mm at 300mm long drill quite straignt. I got them from Tilgear.

Wealden also do long & extra long twist drills

Hi, xy

I have ground my 6mm long drill into a brad point for making totes, it goes nice and straight.
