Found some oak offcuts around 15mm thick.

To make log effect sorted out a couple of router roundover cutters, 6.3mm and 12mm.

Prepared a scrap piece of timber (meranti) to 12.6mm square and trying the 6.3 cutter.

Cut the four corners and it seems it will work, might distress actual pieces of oak when ready.

A member who works on log cabins here on the UKforum is going to let me have some joint and plan details, so will be ready, his cabin full size took three days, mine I think will take longer.

Got the lumber together and sized at 12.6mm, oak nameboard offcuts, and my next session I intend to use a 6.3 roundover bit on the router table, so its going tobe a noisy one.

Should be a interesting idea Devonwoody =D>

Just a thought- would it be worth keeping the stock square untill you've done all your halving joints etc, then round them over. i do a similar thing with hand rails and it makes life so much easier :p

All the best

Simon

Simon, your good advice came in a bit late for me, I was in the W/S and did 228 passes over a round over bit and I have got a very distressed look, it didn't like oak nor using short lengths.

I think I shall have to hand saw the corner joints.

Switched over to late evening work in the W/S when the heat has cooled down.

Still around 78Far.

Made myself a very expensive depth gauge for the log cuts.

Looking around for miniture roses and some grasses

Looks like its coming along well ! So are all tissue boxes the same size ? do you buy your wood in, or manage to find offcuts from somewhere ?

Simon

Simon the above box is the most popular size and usually the cheapest.

There is a cubic tissue box, (see my dotty box)

I haven't used the man sized tissues yet, but it is on the stocks.

Regarding timber, the last 18 months I have been using Maple, sapelle, ash from large boards purchased from timber outlets and when visiting I have always gone to look at their rubbish bin and taken stock from them. In addition I took up the hobby of woodwork and have accumulated large amounts of offcuts from boards purchased over the last 8 years.

The works team have got a reasonable level I think for log cabin construction.

The roof line reached.

Further construction is set to be delayed visitors with dollies arriving.

OK, construction on log cabin tissue box has finished for this season, (I am going for an eye operation in 2 days time, and I am almost sure that I will need to live in a dust free atmosphere of a while)

When I return to the workshop, I might try a coat of satin varnish over the box without a cleanup (trial area) or get a dremel out and clean up the glue and put varnish on.
Might even consider using some of the old model railway scenic powders and give it a real rustic look.

Anyway I brought it in the house and didnt say anything and the misses later spotted the addition and said "I like that".

So cheers, I expect to be watching for a while.
