Local Sawmill

I have a horizontal slice of an Oak Tree which is approx 15in Diameter and 3.5in Thick.I would like to get this sliced in half to get 2 slices approx 1.75in thick. Does anybody know where I can get this done locally to me,which is in Worcestershire or the surrounding area?

Thanks for the reply,but I am disabled,so can't manage it.I have tried local wood sawmills,but they won't do it because it is not their wood,and not insured.

BUT looking again at what you are asking for, if you could get it cut, your two thin slices are likely to split and distort quite a lot so might not be much use.

The bowsaw option is probably your best bet, albeit you may have to persuade someone to do it for you.
Don't forget that it will almost certainly split as it dries out.

The Oak is well dried out as it has been stored for 6 months in my shed

6 months is not actually very long for 3" oak, even if it is entirely end-grain. Was the tree felled 6 months ago? If so, the water content would not be at its lowest anyway, the sap would still be high in August.
I'd test it with a meter. I've just ordered one off eBay, they are cheap as chips compared with what they used to cost.

You could try Trionic Joinery on the A4103. A bit far maybe but IIRC they have a resaw.

Or pop into Stevens Saws in Claines http://www.stevens-saws.co.uk/location.html They might be able to suggest someone.

Or if you can afford the 'waste', could you not get someone to chainsaw it down the middle?

Or is there not a friendly able-bodied neighbour who could do it for you if you got that handsaw suggested earlier?

A bandsaw with 15" depth of cut is not common outside of sawmills, most workshops would have one with something like 8" to 12" I would think.

With that in mind you could have it crosscut into two semi-circles first, then each of those cut in half thickness wise. The reduced thickness semi-circles could then be glued back together into two complete circles of reduced thickness.

That would get round the depth of cut issue on most bandsaws and the glue line if done well may well not show.

Depends on what you are planning to do with them afterwards, and how much trouble you want to go to I guess. They will likely split at some stage as already mentioned.
