I called in my local tool shop this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see that they are now selling LN stuff as well as Veritas.
In their cabinet was a tiny LN No. 1 in bronze which the salesperson insisted I had a look and handle it.
What a joy, so perfectly formed - I cannot imagine that any purchaser would use it, but lock it away in a glass cabinet to stare at it whenever the occasion permitted?

Makes a dandy paper weight.

IIRC some people who REALLY like their children have bought a LN #1 for a 3 year old...

I consider the Stanley No1 (and also the no 2 both the normal and the long version) and their LN clones more a instrument makers alike tool. They can be used but holding them is more a matter of fingers than hadns.

The LN are for the shop the stanleys for the display case.

Hi Rod,

Do you mind me asking which shop that is ?

Don't know anywhere local that stocks decent gear like that, although perhaps best for my wallet if I don't !!!

Cheers, Paul. :D

Paul - Elliotts4tools near junction 9 M3.

Getting more and more dangerous to visit?

Who is it round here who has one ? I distinctly remember seeing an LN No 1 in the flesh at Phillys bash many moons ago it seems.

Cheers Mike

Ah yes, Martin and very nice it was too.

Hi, my name is Jon and I buy tools.
I confess, I bought a L-N #1.
No excuses that it would fit my kid’s hands.
There was one heavily marked down in price shortly before the Kentish branch of Axminster moved from Faversham to Sittingbourne. There was no rational reason.
True, I can only curl two fingers around the handle, but it does get used. I find it particularly handy when planning a flat on a cylinder, compared to a block plane it is very high and this gives a nice vertical visual reference so I am more likely to plane one flat, not numerous facets. Not admittedly something I do a lot but as it gets used, it is worthy of a place in my workshop. Were that to change, I am pretty sure I could sell it for more that I paid for it on the ‘Bay so still better spent money than all the tools I have bought over the years that turned out to be completely useless…
Jon.
