Losos, as a dog lover, that would certainly be part of the plan. A dog would also a very useful for warning the door bell has rung or there is someone about.
You talk to them and they communicate with you without words…the next best thing to human companionship for a deafy without doubt.

Martin, I have found the French to be exceedingly nice. The only exceptions being some in Paris and Calais, where they tend to reply in English when you have made the effort to speak French. But they see so many Brits this is hardly surprising. My family spent one great evening with our farmer neighbour in Brittany one time. He spoke Breton and less French than me but we drank wine, played boule and had a great time anyway.
The French do seem to have much more time for people and I have found them in general to be far more patient, which is a boon for me.
Thanks once again and a very kind offer of help and what a lucky chap you are to have a French girlfriend. At the moment I am still really doing a viability check.
All your comments have been heartening, which is handy as options are somewhat limited. Glad I asked, as I keep finding - workers of wood are such nice people.

I live between the Netherlands and Italy, hailing from Wales originally
Just a few general tips:
Learn the language as quickly as you can (best before you go if you are not already proficient) and really try to speak French as often as you can. watch French news, read La Monde or any other French Newspaper - so your up to date and in tune with the local goings on
I like to socialise with the locals and not seek out fellow brits - that helps me integrate well
Many countries have books in English explaining all the odd little rules foreigners need to know and heed - worth it's weight in gold.
Throw a party for your new neighbours in a local style (e.g cheese and sausages on sticks served on paper plates would appal our Italian friends and neighbours (the Dutch would be fine with that though)
I usually join a local sports club just so I can get to know people - I'm married with young children now so they introduce me to other parents and that is also very useful.
And the biggest thing I've learned of many years living abroad (I've also lived in the US , and Malaysia) is that there are many things they do better than dear old Blighty and things that Blighty do better, so keep an open mind, you be surprised how well other countries run themselves.
Just go for it, otherwise you'll regret not doing it later in life when it gets even harder.
