David,

That is Karl, a Bouvier de Flandres (spelling............??) who belongs to Thomas L-N.

A nice picture of him can be found on my blog

http://www.davidcharlesworth.co.uk/blog/ if you scroll down to June 6th.

Karl is very fierce, being a Belgian cattle dog, but fortunately he likes me, and makes a splendid mascot.

best wishes,
David

Was wondering if someone would guess he is a Bouvier, and certainly wasn't expecting "The man" to chime in for the answer. I expected the answer to be that Karl is a giant Schnauzer. Like I said, "useless trivia".

Bouviers do tend to be "fierce", like you said, but I think not because they are typically mean dogs, but because they are primarily bred to work as they do. They are herders, cattle dogs, and oddly enough will also herd people if allowed, especially the family who is fortunate enough to adopt them. Many people will buy them as pets without knowing their instincts to herd and guard and then wonder later on why the dogs seem to be "mean" toward neighbors outside the family. Not mean, just doing what they do.

Anyway, things we learn from paying attention huh? haha

Also , thanks for the many DVD's and the wealth of information you've shared with the rest of us, Mr. C. Being a latecomer to woodworking makes it difficult to catch up on "tricks of the trade" and you've helped shortened the route to quality work. Thank you.

David,

Thank you.

By fierce I did not intend to imply mean....

You give a perfect description of Karl's habits.

( we have two Irish red & white setters who can be found on The Mawgan Diaries on my website. They have their own idiosyncrasies! The diaries are written by Mawgan and kindly typed by Pat, she deals with the pooter).

an uncle of mine had a sheep dog of some sort, a collie i think

mum said it used to "herd" the children in the family

Collie are also bred to be herding dogs, yes. And there are many examples of dogs such as this who prevent children from wandering into traffic, or other such feats. And people are constantly amazed at this? This is what the dogs do, what they are bred for. I grew up with a collie, great dogs.

Karl, a Bouvier Des Flandres, is also a herding, guard, protector, hunting, search, rescue able dog. Though I don't know this particular dog, these dogs will also attach themselves to one or two in the family and protect with their lives. And will instinctively protect children, often to the surprise of others. Wonderful friends.

But sorry to digress, this is a site for woodworkers.

Yep. I had the same problem at that airport. Darn old Jarno Trulli in my way, otherwise I might have seen you there.
