i've been given a startrite mercury bench mounted drill a wadkin spindle moulder and a pro mex dust extractor. When i switch on the drill the motor hums but nothing happens if i remove the drive belt and spin the pulley the motor runs and if i stop the drill and switch it back on and i spin the pulley the other way it runs that way. does this mean the bushes need replacing or can you suggest some thing else as the drill is a really solid cast iron machine and i would like to get it running properly. when i plug in the dust extractor it blows the fuse in the extension lead, i don't mind stripping it down but i wouldnt know what to look for so any help trouble shooting would be great. The spindle moulder is 3 phase so i think i will try to sell this and use the money to fix the other machines. they all belonged to a friend of my brothers who has a joinery business and he said they were all working ok when he stopped using them as he upgraded to new machines but they have stood idle in his workshop for quite a while, i am hoping to get these fixed up as i am on a tight budget at the moment and i couldnt hope to buy machines like these
cheers for your help Kenny

if you can see the shaft at each end (presumably you can see it at least at one end!) then just give a quick squirt around where the base of the shaft, and turn around by hand if you can to help it work in.

i will give it a go tomorrow but before i do the pulley spins pretty freely when the power is off

With those symtoms I would be looking at the starting capacitor if it had one, either bad connection or missing,

Does the motor have a capacitor to start it this could be faulty .Or does the motor have a centrifugal switch that should connect a start winding when the motor stops some times it gives a click as it does it this could be stuck or faulty electrically.

Check the dust extractor fan is free moving and try to find out its power if its 3hp it will blow fuses on start up use 13a fuse to try it out.
