Hi all

Sure there both great makes I like the clifton more because its british made and looks great, and the price is great to but is there any major differences between that and the more expensive of the two.

Apart from the points you've already noted, these are my pluses for Clifton:
The Clifton is heavier
If thrown out of a window, the Clifton will bounce, the LN will deform
The Clifton uses a two part StaySet cap iron (handy for speedy touch ups)
The Clifton is Green
The blade is proper steel (this now also an option on the LN)

They're all very, very good, any differences in performance or quality of manufacture or design are debatable and pretty minor, go somewhere you can handle them and just go with what you like best, you won't be dissapointed with any of them !

I bought the Clifton in preference to LN. They are similar specs but I prefer the handling of the Clifton - partly because it's heavier but also the shape of the sides. I also prefer the blades and the Stay-set cap iron.

The Clifton is also virtually unbreakable. I have seen the drop test that Clifton did, where they dropped a #7 body 20 feet onto a concrete floor. I think it dented the floor but the plane was fine

Either would be good - best to try before you buy, if possible, to see which you prefer.

I've seen the Cliftons compared with the LN's a lot on US forums. Prejudice aside there was a lot of criticism for the setup of the Cliftons when delivered - how flat the sole was, how well the blade sat, how square the sides were, general use-ability out of the box.

Are these comments fair.

Once I found this site I left US forums as there are some very ignorant (and as usual with the most ignorant they were also the most vocal) contributors. I've enjoyed being closer to home so far...

I have four Clifton bench planes, a shoulder plane and the concave spokeshave and they've all been excellent - no problems at all.

I have seven Clifton bench planes (as well as a shoulder plane) and just one from several years ago was very slightly concave (though actually just within LN/Clifton spec)
I have had a few issues with LNs (blocks, not bench planes.)

Customer care from both is superb though, as neither want anything below par out in the wild.

Mick Hudson of Clico takes a high grade testing plate around the shows to confirm the flatness of Cliftons.

As I remember, out of the box, LN blades are finer ground, but still need preparatory work, so it doesn't really make any difference.

When I bought my first good quality bench plane I tried out the Clifton and LN at Axminster's shop in Devon. The Clifton just felt right to me and I have not been disappointed. I have since added further Clifton planes and they are all excellent.

I've a Clifton No 7 in its nice blue box - completely unused and mint. It's a 'B' grade, but can't see any defects.

I'm open to offers if you're still after one. It'd be a saving over one from the shops and no noticeable difference.
