Thanks again

You have probably said in a previous post Mark but I am too lazy to trawl through them all.....what do you use to carve the finials? I am asking because I have a couple of handles to make for an amphora and though cutting out the basic shape with a jigsaw is OK getting the rest of it done is proving a pig with rasps and sandpaper.

Thank you

I use a 30mm long x 10mm carving burr which I put into my jacobs chuck in my head stock. I run the lathe at around 2500 rpm ( go what ever speed you are happy with)

Also with the jacobs chuck you need to take care as too much force away from the head stock can loosen it and pull it out. I have not had an issue but thought i should mention it.

Or small chuck jaws will do it.

Than I just roll my piece over it working with the grain until I get a fairly good shape.

Then I change over to a 2inch hook and loop arbor with 120 grit on and smooth with that.

For the inside curves put a piece of dowel in your chuck or similar with 120 tapped around it.

Then I just go down through the grits and finish by hand at 400-600

Hope this helps.
