Made this wee box to keep the remote controls in, out of a few bits of leftover Elm. Reminds me of Marble and its kind of difficult to see the dovetails, just wish I'd had more of the timber in bigger sizes. It was a real pig to cut and plane, but didn't want to throw it away!

That's very nice.

I actually did a double take at whether there was a relief formed into the surface, as the grain is so 3-dimensional looking.

I think when you come across an unusual grain pattern its nice to use it in a tactile object like this where people can see and appreciate it.

Cheers, Ed.

Yes I like the way you have placed the grain, very pleasant to look at. I think dovetails on contrasting wood has been done to death and has got a little boring (I know I'm going to contradict my self now with my new jig  ). I like them in this, subtle.

That's really beautiful in its simplicity. The eye is just drawn to the beauty of the wood without being distracted by design.

I really like the way that the grain flows around the corners.

I posted this more to show the fab grain of this timber rather than the box, which is just a box. Have been given a piece of European Walnut, from Paul at Goulden Hardwoods, which is just enough for the sides of another one with beautiful patterns and colour changes. I need to find something to make the top and bottom panels to match. I'll post that when its done.

Great box Bloo, well done mate. I think Elm is my favourite wood (at the moment), the grain can be so variable, almost wild in some cases as in your box.

The Elm we are using or buy now is that English Elm? I thought that Dutch Elm disease had just about killed them off in this country. :( A pity for sure.

Cheers, Tony.
