Lathe valuation

Hello - I am hoping someone can give me a valuation for my fathers lathe. He died in 2014 and my mum is now ready to start selling the equipment from his workshop. I did post about this a year or so ago but she found it difficult to think about dismantling his workshop but is now in a much better place and is keen for his equipment to go to a good home.

I understand that it's a very serious bit of kit but wondered whether anyone would be able to give an idea of how much it's worth.

It's a Yandle's Record Power DVR XP swivel head and has the following:

Heavy duty cast iron bed and stand.
Electronic variable speed.
8inch throat.
Attached light
Outboard bowl turning accessory
Bowl tool rest
Short and long tool rests
With thread adaptor

It has been lightly used and is in excellent condition.

Search Ebay for Record Power Nova DVR XP and tick the ' show sold items' box. This should give you an indication of what they sell for.

I did have a look - there was one that went for £1,120. Hoping to get an idea of whether that's a good price or not.

eBay can be a funny place at times for what things sell for. For something in very good condition and only a couple of years old and still avalable I'd expect as a rough guide for it to go for between 50 - 75% of its current price. If one went recently as you say for £1,120.00 then that's about the 50% mark. I'd give it a really good clean, take some decent pictures of it and put a reserve of about a grand on it and see what happens.

If it's about £1100 eBay, put it up for sale here at a £1000 and there will not be the 10% sellers fee eBay charges, plus any PayPal fee.

One of the other reasons that sales prices vary is location. If something is expensive, large and heavy you really need to find a buyer reasonably local or the price / desirability of the item has to be enough to warrant transport costs.

Definitely worth a go on here first. I sold on a large machine to a dealer a couple of months ago then low and behold find one of the forum members looking for one. #-o

Another thought is to see if any woodturning clubs near you and have a word, you never know!

I'd say that's a fair price for that particular sale on eBay.
However you need to note two important aspects;
Firstly, it's a newer model that might still just be under warranty and was in genuinely excellent condition from the photos.
Secondly, the sale included a chuck and jaws which are worth almost £100 by itself.

It didn't help that it was wrongly described as a Record Maxi 1 (which caused me a wasted day coming down from London to see it last year.)
I suspect that having been on the AWGB forum for some time and seen by a local well known turner, most local clubs may be already be aware of it's availability.

Unless you've already had an offer here, I'd suggest that the best price will be got via an eBay auction.
Clean it up as best you can, take lots of really good clear photographs to show it's condition and what's included. Then start the auction at 99p and set a realistic reserve, say £775.
If you get lucky you may get a lot more, but Nova DVR lathes are a bit 'Marmite' some people really don't like the direct drive system with it's complex electronics, so it may not hit that reserve.
Just after Christmas when people are getting their bills is not an ideal time to sell it. It might be better to wait until later in the year when prices of new lathes have been further brexited up and it will appear better value.

Yes, that is the one. Firstly, apologies if you had a wasted trip and thanks for the advice. I know we did have someone who came to buy some other items who kindly offered to post the lathe on a specialist website but I was unaware that the post was inaccurate. I believe that post/thread now gives an accurate description? Do please let me know if my own post is inaccurate in any way and I will amend.

Unfortunately my Mum and I are swimming in the dark here as neither of us have any knowledge of these tools. We have been advised that we should get a decent price for the Lathe, but that it would very much depend on timing as there's not a huge market for it. I think she'd rather wait and see if there's someone from a specialist website that wants it rather than venture into eBay land.

Not for you to apologise, you and your mother didn't supply the false details. A trip to Bath is never a problem though ;-)

No inaccuracies there, between this thread and the one on the AWGB forum all the detail are there and correct now.

I'd give it a month or two, but eventually the posts on the forum will be difficult to see unless 'bumped up' by commenting that the lathe is still for sale.
eBay is likely to get a sale in fast order if the reserve, or 'buy it now', price is reasonable when you need to shift it.
