Has anyone else been having problems with this update?

Understand it fixes a potential security hole in the DNS mechanism and that's where my problem lies. Tried installing it twice and both times afterwards unable to resolve any web addresses. Had to restore both times.

Uploaded to three machines (XP Home) not a problem.

All my network connections working fine.

No problems at all on my one remaining full-size machine with XP Pro (Vista HP and Vista Ultimate on the other two). No problems with XP Media Edition on the VAIO laptop.

Ray.

Hello Roger

Yes I did.

Downloaded and installed both the malicious software tool and the latest security update and my broadband died.

The XP connection diagnostic program suggested that my modem wasn't working properly. I was sending and receiving traffic, but very slowly.

System restore removed both of the patches and all appears to be fine.

This has happened with Microsft's updates in the past. I usually wait a day or so before downloading them but today, rain has stopped play outside so I downloaded them.

I've been back to the Microsoft update site, which shows them as not installed, but now have a problem. If one, or both of the patches, are faulty, they are now sitting on my hard disk, waiting to be installed.

As a matter of interest, do you have an AMD processor? There was a problem with service pack three which may affect machines with AMD processors. I ran the SP3 software only to be told after half an hour or so that 'there was a problem with the installation' and that my computer 'may not work properly'. Nice one Bill.

Cheers

Dave

Do you by any chance use Norton Software there was/is a problem with SP3 and compatability.

See HERE

And maybe HERE

EDIT: just had someone with a post update problem on XP.

They run Zone Alarm,
traced it to zone alarm (free); somehow the settings on the Firewall / Main page had changed from medium to high. The only clue was a lot of TCP (flags:S) outgoing being blocked in the firewall log. Normally, this log is very quite. Prior to the windows update today last entry was 19/6!

Hello Chas

Thanks for the info.

I gave up using Norton some time ago, but I do use the free Zone alarm program.

I'll have a look at it.

Cheers

Dave

I had so many problems with my XP auto updates, I also had MS OneCare. After 3 complete reinstalls I scraped the PC and One Care ( they do not make it easy to stop your subscription) and bought a Dell 310 with Vista and Mcafee SS, no problems yet. What really got me like some others, an update would try to install and then the dreaded message your PC may not work, when it was fine before

Glad to see at least one other person has a problem. Don't get me wrong - neither automatic update nor Norton will get house room on this laptop

many problems with RC2 of xpSP3

3 machines installed with xpSP3 full release, no problems here!

Steve

Under advice from others on the forum who knows a lot more about 'puters than I do, 'automatic updates' for XP has been switched "off" for over 12 months and so far the machine has run faultlessly (apart from when I bu##er*d it up a while back) but I do have a reasonable Firewall (Comodo) and Avast anti-viral protection - Rob

The wifes computer stoped working on the net so i have disabled auto update and restored computer to yesterday all ok now, but how do you find out when microsoft have resolved this problem please.

My XP, AMD, Zone Alarm PC did an automatic update when I switched off late last night - it was not supposed to update without getting permission!!

Result today no internet connection until now, when I did a system restore.

Just read all your lovely warnings - wish I had read them last night?

Thanks OLD.

Just downloaded the latest version of ZA via your link, installed the XP update and all seems well.

Yesterday I checked ZA for updates via it's interface, but it didn't work. It does now.

Woodbloke, I'd be wary of ignoring all the security updates. I've just set up my machine to inform me when they are ready and then install what I want, when I want to.

Cheers

Dave

Yes i was a victum of Windows XP update, couldn't connect to the internet, so there was no way of finding out what actually happend, by end of play yesterday, by luck i reduced the protection of ZA and behold it worked, i went online and on every forum in the world it was mentioned., which is no bloody good if you cannot get online

All sorted now, NOT thanks to Windows though, and a complete day wasted

Thanks microsoft .... NOT

I don't think it is fair to always blame windows.

M$ informed other software suppliers that certain dll's etc were to be altered in a move to improve security, remove buggs etc. and warned as always that the use of certain undocumented features to achieve the jumping through certain hoops was not recommended.

Companies like ZA did in fact update their software to accommodate most changes.

In fact Rogers quip about Option 1 and Option 2 missed the mark.
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

ZA first option in the above link is to Update to the latest version which had the changes incorporated to avoid the problem,

Unfortunately a lot of people did not have the latest update installed. *

The warning about not keeping abreast of software updates be it M$ or other vendors is very valid. The ability for a working system to go pear shaped because someone has made an error in coding is all too easy, but to blame the coder for not knowing what someone else in a totaly different company has or has not done is hardly fair, and that is not even considering the can of worms developed by individual users with their own personal mix of applications. In fact due to enforced competition laws even persons in differing departments of M$ are not allowed to co-operate in the sharing of information in case it gives them an unfair advantage over rival organizations.

* This in itself can compound the problems as attempts to correct the problem involving now corrupted ZA installation lists by removing the old version probably won't work.

Even using the so called unistall option (add remove programs) succesfully can leave you with enough garbage still in the system that it takes a foulscap sheet to document proceedures to get rid of it.

Anybody still having problems with ZA may wish to go though this list copied from the ZA forum.

If upgrade process didn’t work for some reason; try following this procedure from the zone alarm forum site.
