Excellent work. You're really getting into this aren't you?

Oh yes! I had a little windfall the other day so kitted out my workshop with a planer/thicknesser, bandsaw, bobbin sander, drill press and vacuum.

Then my scrollsaw packed up!

I was gutted.

Thanks to the kindness of NazNomad I'm back up and running and going at it like a bull at a gate.

The only flea in the ointment is that I am not quite fully retired and have to squeeze the odd bit of work in between projects :(

Love this forum.

Regards

Thank you Brian. Once I'm half as good as you I'll be a happy bunny.

My favourite is the bow box but I love the grain on the flower box lid.

There's a little story to go with it (sorry longer than I intended)...

We don't have any trees on Westray, which is the one thing we miss.

Sycamore seems quite common as hedging but I've never seen it as a tree. I don't know if it is cut back or if it is just the salty winds that keep it in check.

Anyway....

Outside the end of our house there is a Sycamore tree (I know I said there weren't any, bear with me). I say tree because it has a dead truck that is about six inches this with a couple of short branches about 2-3 inches thick. At some point somebody has savagely coppiced it and now it has turned into a bush with loads of shoots growing from the base.

I have looked at this "tree" many times since we moved here and cursed whichever ***** coppiced it.

So...

With my constant search for interesting wood, I figured the trunk is dead anyway and went out and had at it with my saw! (hammer)

Ripped it down, planed it and got some grand little pieces with beautiful grain.

Oh, in case anyone hasn't figured, the lid on the flower box is homegrown sycamore...

Lovely boxes Phill, especially the bow one. What woods did you use for it?

Well done

Charley

Thank you Charley.

Re the woods... Hmm, well I used some dark wood for the dark bits and some light for the light bits and some medium coloured wood for the medium bits :)

Seriously, I'm afraid I don't know. This is definitely an area I would like to get to know better. The light bits in the ribbons are slats from an old Ikea blind, so maybe beach. The dark wood for the body, could be anything!

Sorry.

Thanks Phill. It's good to know there is somebody else like me who can't tell the difference between woods. Light and dark I'm okay with, after that I couldn't tell the difference between ash and alder.

Keep up the good work.
