I know without a doubt that to many of you this will seem a stupid question with an obvious answer, so I can only apologize, but as I am still a complete novice in the world of computers I ask would ask you not to laugh to loud

Anyway when I turned my pc on yesterday I found that all the pages and text were at least 50% to 100% larger then they were when I turned it of the night before. For instance when I go on the internet, the AOL home page is far to big to fit on the screen and I have to scroll from side to side, and if I go on somewhere like Google the text (and spaces in between) are so big, it can only fit 3 or 4 search results on a page.
Also, even though I have them set to the smallest size, the icons on my desktop are about 1 3/4" high and now take up most of the page, and the task bar at the bottom is 3 inches wide and I cannot reduce it's size.

By way of showing what I mean, on the UKworkshop home page, I usually see the "Home" "Reviews" "How-To" etc all along the top of the screen in one line and ending with "Forums", but now they are on 1 1/2 lines, with Links, Top Picks and Forums on the second line.

As I have said, to most of you there is probably an obviously answer to this, but I have tried everything with no luck.

Thank you in advance.

Mike

LN,

Hold down your Ctrl key and rotate the roller/wheel on your mouse...

Yeah Nice, very funny (hammer) I can do without you today  I am embarrassed enough by my question.

As it happens you don't need to touch the Ctrl key, all you have to do is click the wheel/roller.

Cheers

Mike

Mike, lord nibbo was giving you the right info, if you press ctrl and hold it while moving the mouse wheel it changes the size of your screen.

Mike,
if your icons are enlarged as well it probably means your screen resolution is wrong. Right click on an empty part of desktop and choose properties, then click the settings tab and make sure your screen resolution is correct for your monitor. I can't tell you what the "correct" resolution is because it varies with the physical size of your monitor and personal taste (if it's a CRT) but a decent 17" should look about right at 1024 X 768. TFTs however have a "native" resolution, i.e. they are specifically designed to run at one particular resolution, for a non-widescreen 17" this is usually 1280 X 1024. You'll know when a TFT is correct because every other resolution will make icons (and text in particular) look fuzzy and slightly out of focus.

Hope this helps

Mark

Hi LN, sorry mate but I thought you were joking.

I did try your suggestion but as Dom says it does not work, that is the reason that I thought you were joking.

Mark thanks a lot, your idea to alter the resolution was spot on and everything is 99.9% better. I say 99.9% because the letters could do with being just a tad larger. The icons are perfect, it is just the words that are a bit small. That said if they cannot be made any larger, it certainly would not be a problem, but if they can be it would be perfect. Any idea's?

Thanks again Mark.

Cheers

mike are you using vista or xp??

if xp, then control panel and desktop display.
you can then change appearence and other settings.

remember that to get some of these things to stay you have to re-start the computer, and this may have been where you went wrong.

don't worry about being new or lacking understanding computers.
i have still not found an auditing accountant who understands the computer programme that i use for my business accounts, and yet the inland revenue have accepted the programme, and many small companies use it.

paul

Mike,
go back to display properties and this time click the appearance tab instead of settings, then hit the advanced button (lower right in the window), in the "item" list choose icon then you can set icon and text size individually.
