Hell of a lot cheaper than a domino!

They all seem to be coming up with alternative fixings, CMT and that Butterfly lock thing. I think they are realising the money is in making joinery quicker.

Clever solution to a problem that didn't really exist. How soon before you lose the magnetic box just before you want to open or close a joint? And how often do you want to open a joint again - the examples used in the video were a stair handrail, a bookcase and a table leg. Not sure I would want to be opening and closing those multiple times anyway. Neat idea but at that price a tad unneccesary for the hobbyist I think.

Chems, they have been around for quiet a while i noticed them a year or 2 ago when looking at the lamello website. Clever idea i wonder how tight they pull the joint up.

Must just be new to axminster,

I guess it would be good for items you may need to take apart to transport etc. Defiantly no use in the hobby shop thou, the one or 2 examples I can think of, which seem to involve mitres can be overcome easily enough.

They pull the joint up to 80 kilos! I just wonder if yu would remember where the connectors are when you need to take it apart??

It would probably be of great use to the kitchen fitters. I know of a couple places in my kitchen it would've come in handy...
As it stands, i have to lay on the bench next to the sink to get to some of the electrickery

ive been in the joinery business for over 12 years, and i was absolutely amazed by this bit of kit.

I went over to Axminster in Nuneaton where i saw it for the first time, the joints are very strong, in my opinion i would use it for a replacement of cramps in the gluing up process, however that would work out very very expensive and until the cost goes down for the metal dowels its something i will not entertain.

The other use for me is if i were to build a set of wardrobes or similar that couldn't be taken through a door, i could label it all up and then take it all apart to be rebuilt in situ with no real hassle.

All in my humble opinion.

Cheers

Mark

Saw that reviewed in British Woodworking. Lovely idea but at 3.50 a pop for the fixings....

That kind of system has been used in implantable medical devices for 20 years, not sure about it personally...

In what way - idle curiosity - fundamentals for medical use as well, or just otiose for woodworking?

Limb extension is one use, every few weeks you'd go in for treatment and they'd use a rotationg magnet to increase the compression on an internal fixator that in turn places tension on the bone, the osteoblasts are then promoted to relieve the tension on the bone by destroying areas of it and rebuilding it in less tension, ie, longer. Not sure I'd want to do that.

I can see the appeal of a completely hidden fixing for banisters as they suggest, however the expense of each fixing and the risk that you get a slight missallignement that's enough to stop the rotation of the screw with no option to just twist a bit harder makes me think it's not as parctical in real life as it is in a demonstration, not sure i'd want to use that either
