I haven't, but I do trim a lot of hedges and can express a preference for the sort of step ladder that has rungs up both sides so it can be unfolded into a standard ladder ladder. I can straddle the top with a foot on either side which gives a nice stable posture for hedge trimming.

If you're doing something as high up as in that photo, like taking the tops out of leylandii, I'd suggest thinking about getting someone in while you sip on a G&T. It's the only way.

Roger as this is a woodworking forum, you may like to try this with some of the old timbers from your cottage

Roger - Looks like the ladder is made from Meccano! Can it be that stable - sideways that is ?
I'm with Mr Jay on this one if you have to be that high up get someone in or hire a cherry picker.

Cheers :)

Who is ok on ladders providing he can keep both hands on and not look down

Some of the petrol brushcutters can be fitted with hedge trimming blades.

Not quite as high as them steps, but youd get to keep 2 feet on the ground
