Krenov planes

I've been interested to read about Krenov planes, so looking for recommendations from anyone who has made or used one, particularly small block plane or smoother. Maybe @thetyreman could help?

I made myself a Krenov style plane a few years ago. I imported a Hock blade for it that takes a good edge.
An interesting project, but it hardly gets used. I find it difficult to adjust compared to standard planes. My Grandfather's old Stanley No4½ is always my first go to.

I can recommend buying david finck's book making and mastering wood planes, you will definitely not regret it, he was actually taught by krenov himself, it's about £30 from classic hand tools but it's one of my favourite woodworking books, if you need any help let me know, the blades are pretty expensive in the uk but my one remains my favourite smoother of all of them, I should really make a few more.

I have an original smoother made for me by Jim Krenov, and used this to guide a guide building a couple of Krenov-style planes in 2013, in single blade format - prior to the chipbreaker revolution.



Alongside the smoother is a small block plane. This had a body length of 5 ¼”, and uses a 1 ¼” wide and 1/8” thick Mugingfang blade (available from Lee Valley). The construction is the same as the smoother, however the bed angle of the block plane is 40 degrees. This provides for a low cutting angle that works end grain well.

I have Fincks book, carl stammerjohn on YT is also very useful. I'm in the middle of making one at the moment. If you are patient the hock blade sets come up on ebay at more reasonable prices.

Interesting thread. I must put building a plane on my future projects list along side the other things I fear I'll never get around to.
