Knotting - can I use shellac?

Hi guys, planned to paint some skirting today and I just gone to my "messy and dangerous liquids" cupboard. I know I have a bottle of knotting (but no idea what its shelf-life is) and I can't find it. I don't think I've thrown it away, but it's knot there (ho-ho).

So, can I just make up some garnet polish and use that in the same way? I believe that knotting is shellac-based, but I don't know if it is just shellac (in which case I think garnet will work just as well) or whether other ingredients are added.

Any (urgent!) help great appreciated!

It is just shellac, Steve.

That's my understanding too. My bottle of knotting just says it's Shellac.
