Not really a WIP, more like I took a few photos as I went along. I wasn't going to bother as it's only really a bit of domino joinery but the openings were a long way out which made it a bit more interesting.
There were originally some shutters on the window but they were in a real state and didn't work/fit properly, partly due to a new window that was fitted which was deeper than the original one.
The window is leaning inwards and the frame that the shutters fit in is leaning outwards, and to the right by about 20mm which you can see in the photo, I was struggling for a datum! There wasn't much chance of me making working shutters to fit plus the customer said they would never really close them anyway as it would mean they couldn't keep anything like plants etc in the window so they agreed on some fake shutters. I say fake shutters but it's really the first leaf of some shutters that I made if that makes any sense.
First job was to make some MDF templates of the openings, I found the left hand side was 1" wider at the bottom than the top, I decided the easiest way was to make the shutters oversize and then just trim to size.
Templates and some Maple left over from the kitchen build to make them out of.
Like I said it was just Domino joinery, no real skill involved.
I altered a cutter for my spindle moulder to make some mouldings that matched the originals and gave them a coat of paint.
Glued the shutters up and then trimmed to size with the track saw.
I just glued the mouldings in with mitre fix, I know that sounds wrong but the beads are only small and the Birch ply won't be moving so there won't be any problems.
And they fitted! I was actually surprised how good they look considering how far out the openings are. There is always going to be some twist in them because of things not lining up but I split it 50/50 between the window and shutter frame so it's less obvious. They are hinged and do close but only cover the first 12" of the window
You don't really notice that both stiles on this one are about 50mm wide at the top and 63mm wide at the bottom.
I wasn't looking forward to this job, because the lining was so far out I couldn't see it ending well, but as it turned out I do think I actually managed to polish a turd
