That got you thinking, eh? But I really do need help with the sink. I am fitting a solid oak kitchen in our new house, and I have got my hands on a rather nice 'doulton' belfast sink. What makes it good fo us is the fact that it is much more shallow than most Belfast sinks are. And it looks good, apart from...

Rust? It looks like rust, but whatever it is, it is a brown, streaky stain on the bottom of the ceramic sink. I have already bleached it, to little avail. Now I am stumped. I really don't want to damage it by scouring it too heavily. There must be something that will take the stain off without damaging the sink itself.

Please folks, this is a lovely sink, and it'd be a shame not to bring it back to its former glory. I will use it with a small stain in it, but would love to clean it as much as physically possible.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Many thanks

Neil

if it's ceramic i would have thought that there isn't much that can damage it? have you tried to scrape it off to make sure that it is on top of the ceramic?

If you've established that then I'd try different formulations of household acids or alkalines? Soda for example?

We have a Belfast sink and it's actually surprisingly easy to mark it, especially with metal implements. I have a tub of bar keepers friend handy and that that always brings it back up.

We keep our sinks & the bog clean by using Cheapo biological washing powder.
Usually Tescos

Once a week we bung in a handful and fill the sink - leave for as long as possible (SWMBO usually does this before going to work) and then just rinse off.

Its great for cleaning paint brushes as well!!

At which point Lurker I take a bet that you are not on septic tank drainage!

Hi Neil,

You say you have a Belfast Butler sink that isn't as deep as usual. What you have might be an ordinary old kitchen sink.

I think you will have to live with the brown stain in the glaze. As far as I remember, my old Mum's sink had such a stain, due to something in the water. (Probably ferrite traces) I might be wrong, but as far as I know there ain't anything that will remove it.

The deeper sinks are going on flea-bay for £99.00 plus £18.00 shipping BTW.

Regards
John :)
