Having read the article in this months BW I'm considering a Kell guide, but which one, the No2 or 3? The No2 looks easier to use than the No3 as there's no wedge (something you have to make yourself) If you use a cambered blade, is this easy to achieve on the Kell guides...possibly not :? The other thing I'm thinking about is using the 'ruler trick' with the blade insitue as I do with my Eclipse clone. How easy are the Kells to use with chisels? - Rob

Looking at the pictures in that article, the distance between the rollers is greater than the width of the blade, so I would think it would be difficult to camber the blade - but I've never used one, so can't talk from experience.

Cheers

Rob - I think Richard (?) Kell is a member here - he may see this post.

There was a thread a little while back, in which RK dealt with the issue of camber - can't find it at the mo, but whill have a hunt for it.

Cheers

Hi Rob
I have a #2.
Slight camber by selective pressuring should be possible, though anything more would be impractical.
I don't use it much now, but when I do, I usually leave the blade in place when doing the 'back'
Works fine for bench chisels, though can only just barely handle a Ray Iles pig sticker.
Feels more like training wheels for freehanding to me - as the blade is very low slung (under the wheels' axle) more care is required than with the Veritas.
Cheers

Interesting...have a re-read of the thread. Lots stuff on doing plane blades, but how would a No3 sort out a 6mm LN chisel? I assume that some dedicated wedges would need to be made for different applications. Interesting also how a cambered blade is produced using shims of varying widths - Rob
