Japanese finishing planes "TORYO HOMARE" with body in white oak
"TORYO HOMARE" means: the honor of the master carpenter.
This plane was made by master blacksmith Nakano in Yoita, Niigata province. The blade is layered. The line is made with very hard "Aogami" steel, combined with a softer one, "Nama-ji", to strengthen it and facilitate sharpening. For the "Nama-ji", Nakano used steel from a 19th century bridge.
Master Nakano has been a blacksmith all his life. He is not interested in the technical tables on processing temperatures for the different types of steel; he works only according to his sensitivity and experience. For example, he believes that the weather greatly affects the properties of the metal he is working on and he prefers to work at night, because he can better evaluate the forging process by the color of the glowing metal.
