Just Finished this today.....

I have just finished a this traditional blanket chest for a client today - Ash frame work and purpleheart panels.

After delivering I have got an arts and crafts styled Hall Table and mirror to start.

I've got a piece of purpleheart knocking around at the moment (bought it to experiment with). You've given me some ideas on a smaller scale (I also have some US white oak).

If I may be a bit cheeky, how did you finish the purpleheart? Are you expecting it to dull down a bit over time?

After sanding/scraping the purpleheart was left to "colour" for a few days allowing the distinctive colour to appear.

Then finished with three coats of danish oil and then waxed with Mylands Light Brown finishing wax to give a deep natural sheen.

Purpleheart will darken over time but not as much if you allow it a few days after sanding before applying finishes.

The Danish oil and wax also brought the colour out in the Ash

Its the same price as 2" oak at Good Timber, my local. But its apparently very hard to work with and the dust can have really bad reactions for some people.

First time I've seen Purpleheart used on a UK forum, really nice work dodge, thou I have to agree with Rob, wouldn't have used an oil on ash.

Well in answer to your comments regarding the use of Danish Oil on Ash I fully agree - It is likely to end up with dark streaks etc but that is specifically what the customer wanted! There is no accounting for taste!

They already had some ash bookcases which had been finished that way and they love the colour they are now as they have matured hence asking for the same on the blanket chest - Normally I would go with a pre-cat lacquer and wax.

Whilst I was making this my wife finished the little table using some of the pre-machined legs we acquired and used the off-cuts of the purple heart to make the top - Her creation if below, and before you ask yes the ash on this has been finished with pre-cat!
