Stick with your Mitre Lock cutter, although it takes a bit of getting used to it is an invaluable piece of equipment, I have had one for, oh! probably ten years, the best project I used it for was a 30 drawer cupboard for my local opticians, all Oak, I made the drawers this way for speed and accuracy.
Just keep set-up pieces for the different timber sizes, when cutting thicker timber, fit a false fence to reduce the cut, then remove it and go through a second time at full depth.
