Jet Air Filter Noise and Movement When Off

I've got the AFS 500, a similar unit. The remote isn't particularly good, on mine you need to point it in exactly the right direction for it to operate, and even then sometimes it misses a command. Are you sure that the remote has actually turned it off and it's not just on the slowest speed (which is indeed very slow)? Another workshop I know has one of your units and they've given up on the remote, first person to arrive in the morning has to climb on a bench and turn the air filter on! The good news is they have been running it every working day for well over ten years with no other problems.
 
this is without the remote. I press the off button on the filter, which i can reach. then the fan turns.

slowest speed when working is probably a few hundred RPM, not the 0.1RPM i get when it's switched off but plugged in.

Also I used this for 10 hours without this problem, half hour here, 2 hours there kind of thing, so it seems to have "developed"

some kind of phantom power perhaps.
 
Guess it's time to dig out the warranty and get it replaced, a machine that won't turn off when it's switched off doesn't sound too safe.
 
Yer, problem is I bought it from the UK. It's quite a beast and the transportation from Italy is going to be very annoying.
 
These things tend to use an electronic switch known as a Triac. They need a couple of components in parallel with the switch known as a snubber* network. These can pass a small current when the main triac is switched off. If this is combined with a low power motor, it is just feasible that it could keep turning but at minimal power when it should be off.

The only real solution is switching off at the plug. If you want to do this remotely, then remote control switches - which tend to use relays - will give you 100% power off. Loads around in UK and I'm sure in your part of the world too. Aldi/Lidl have them from time to time and I expect you have those stores in Italy.

Thanks. Just seems a shame that I have a unit with a remote, and I have to get another remote for the plug as well! If I was in the UK I'd send it back for repair.

Daft thought, but it's not just a draft is it? A tiny eddy of air that's causing the fan blade to trickle around?
 
I don't think so, there's a noise, GRRR like the sound of a motor being started when the belt it jammed, and it's straining, my TS used to make that noise when I had only 2kw power, and I had to spin the blade manually to get it to start going.

Interesting idea, I guess it could be that motor has now been 'run-in' and is turning easier than it did when brand new, alternatively could the capacitor be breaking down and passing current?
 
I don't think that is a snubber problem.
Talk to Jet explaining the distance problem and link to the video and they might just diagnose the fault from that and send you the relevant parts to fit yourself.
 
I had the same (or a very similar) fault with my smaller Jet AFS-500 air filter nine months ago.

I use this ceiling mounted air filter rather infrequently, and then for just a few hours at a time. I bought it from Axminster in October 2012, and it worked perfectly until one day in December 2014 when it failed to run properly when I switched it on. I guessed the fault was on the control printed circuit board, and as the device was out of warranty I stumped up £58.72 for a replacement PCB, and since then it has run OK.

In view of the above, and provided you feel comfortable replacing the PCB, perhaps you and Axminster could reach a workable compromise whereby they send you, under warranty, a replacement PCB on the understanding that if that doesn’t rectify the problem then they will replace the whole kit and caboodle.

I don’t know if the AFS-100B and the AFS-500 share the same control PCB, but I attach a photo of my faulty AFS-500 PCB (with an aluminium heatsink removed so that all the components can be seen) should you wish to compare (having first disconnected your filter from the mains of course).

Thanks Jack. I actually bought the filter from another company, as it was cheaper, and they put me through to Jet support. When I explained sending back the unit was going to be tricky and expensive, they offered me the option to replace the PCB myself.

The PCB and a rather large capacitor arrived a few days later, and seemed to actually come from Axminster.

I replaced the PCB, thankfully you don't have to take the whole unit down to do this!

Then it worked. I didn't need to replace the capacitor, I just stopped once it worked.

Good response all round, Jet, Axminster and the Forum.

I’m very interested in the large capacitor you were sent. If you could post a photo of it and also say what the markings are (if not clearly evident), then that would be a great help to me in repairing my faulty circuit board.

I remembered reading this thread a week or so ago and lo and behold my Jet filter started to exhibit similar symptoms.

It's over a year old and purchased from Axminster. A quick e-mail to their technical help people produces a response that a new PCB is on it's way. I can only assume that there is an issue with a batch of PCB's because I wasn't even asked for further information.

Will be fitting PCB later today so hope it does the job.

Thumbs up (again!) for Axy customer support though.

I don't think this goes on the circuit board, probably somewhere where the mains come in.
