I worked for a firm that bought a Chinese company making high value industrial products. The Chinese design department tweaked their component dimensions from contract to contract to try and stop other companies taking spares and repairs business off them. Aftersales is hugely profitable so there were lots of would-be copycats but not so much when you can't mass produce standard parts on the cheap and even have reverse engineering costs to add to every job.
