OK, I'll start it off. And please let's not turn this into a thread that gets locked, eh?

Yes the man's an ***** and a dinosaur ( his own words) and there is no way on this planet that his violent behaviour can be justified and the BBC probably had no choice, especially given his track record. No pun intended. So let's take that as read, shall we?

But.

What happens next?

Now I drive a car that is nearly 12 years old, is unfashionable but is a very comfortable drive. It's a Renault Laguna Grand Tourer. I have enjoyed owning it. I've not enjoyed seeing it vandalised and bits have failed that should not have failed. But overall it's a nice car.

So I'm no petrolhead.

But I like Top Gear. I don't watch much TV, I don't have a TV set and what little I do watch is on iPlayer. But I do watch TG and enjoy it. I enjoy its ridiculousness, I enjoy the banter, I enjoy the stupid challenges they set. It's entertainment. Not for everyone, I agree, but then it's not compulsory to watch.

But love him or hate him, JC is an integral part of the current long-standing show and, for better or for worse, it's not going to be the same without him. If they manage to re-invent TG to the same standard I shall be both amazed and delighted. It's a tall order.

I'm very annoyed with him for wrecking something that brought a smile to the faces of so many people.

What's even worse is that he is now a chattel, available to the highest bidder. He could actually get richer as a result of all this.

So who fancies starting a campaign to bring back Angel Rippon?

Nobody is indispensable, esp not that loud-mouthed moron.
Life will go on, it always does!!

Never chosen to watch TG but when I landed on it always seemed to watch the show out. Clarkson is funny and clearly the funny man in the act. However he punched a co worker and would have been sacked on the spot in any other circumstance. The BBC couldn't possibly have done anything else, especially after the scrutiny over Saville.

If they continue, they have to find someone to try and fill his shoes, then he gets to snigger when the ratings drop. If they dump the show, he then gets to snigger because it's proven that the show wouldn't work without him.

I can't think of a replacement other than Alan Partridge as suggested somewhere else on the net. I'll come back if I do.

Maybe everyone who posts on this thread should suggest a replacement.

Steve, might be an idea to clarify the title of the thread. I had to open it to find out what you meant......I thought we were talking rappers.

Thanks for that Graham.
Yep I'll do it - I can drink a lot and be a loud-mouthed moron if I try really really hard!

I suggest Dave Charlesworth. He could bring a degree of gravitas and intelligence to the prog and take it to new heights. He'd have to shave off that scraggy beard though.

I'd watch Jacob do it. If C Evans gets it I'll avoid [as I do on radio].

Shame Kieth Floyd's dead, he would have been brilliant.

I'm a massive Top Gear fan, I've watched it and every other motoring programme on TV ever since I was about 8. Motoring (not just driving) has always been a dream of mine and there is no other show like Top Gear on tv. I'm very disappointed by Clarkson's actions in the last few years (plus some of those around him on the production staff), it does make you wonder how out of touch they are with the real world, but even in spite of that it was the best programme on terrestrial tv for me. Sundays are not the same without it. Not to mention the high production levels and the massive income it brought the BBC which will have to be made up somehow.

I think both May and Hammond will leave too. Clarkson will land more work from other media and they all have business interests together I think so can see them all going off together.

Not really sure if the show can go on without them, especially if they try keep the same format and imitate those 3 - will just go the way of Fifth Gear if that happens.

I wouldn't mind Chris Evans being one of the presenters, he is a big car fan and could definitely hold the entertainment part of the programme (he has experience producing tv shows too, as JC was executive producer alongside being the presenter). They would need someone with motoring credibility too though on the team. Not sure who that could be, as when they do review the cars you do need someone with critical experience. Clarkson had over 30 years motoring journalism experience so it is a massive loss all round.

I'm a fan of Suzy Perry. Not sure she can be non-PC enough for it though. That was always one of its best points.
Let's face it, there isn't a replacement up to the same standard. Perhaps the BBC should have just fined him half a fortune and so retained the golden goose.....

OK we have two....who's the third? Milliband?

Top Gear on the BBC is dead, it's gone.
Hopefully the three of them will get picked up by another broadcaster, heard Sky and Netflix mentioned earlier, and start it up again.
Different name, same format, less regulated and the viewers will follow

There's no replacement for him or for that matter the three of them. As we all know it takes time to build a relationship, so getting new members of a team to gel will make the first and second series a waste of viewers time.

I wouldn't be surprised if some how this wasn't all planned.

Seth MacFarlane

Sabine Schmitz - the female presenter of the German version of top gear. She did the Nurburgring in a transit and took part in the UK-German challenge show as well - good sense of humour and loves her cars. Apart from that, I cannot immediately think of anyone who would be as good if Top Gear wanted to keep the same formula of over the top stunts and testosterone. I cannot stand Chris Evans so glad he has ruled himself out. In terms of dead-pan humor then Jack Dee is an outside bet for me, Jimmy Carr probably too controversial. Rowan Atkinson lacks a certain something despite being a big petrol head.... struggling to come up with anyone else. Top Gear in its current format was JC with the other two playing sidekick roles. Whoever takes over needs the same sense or irreverence and madness JC styled himself as having. Most other well know celebrities are already known for other things and don't fit that mold. No idea why Alan Partridge is being suggested, but never did find him funny to be honest so may be a personal thing.
