I ordered 3 sets of drawers slides from Ironmongery Direct. The original delivery date was yesterday, the carriers DPD very kindly texted me the day before offering the option to confirm, or change the delivery day. I changed the day to today, which they confirmed by text.
By 6.30pm still no delivery and after scouring their website all links led back to the page telling me that the goods were at their Warrington depot 30 miles away with no reference as to whether it was to be delivered today or not. There was no way to contact them that I could find.

I need these slides for a job next Wed so was getting a little frustrated. I rang IMD, who said they would ring DPD and ring me back. They did this within 3 minutes saying that they couldn't get through and would overnight a second set of slides which will be with me tomorrow.

Proper service. Well done Ironmongery Direct. =D> =D> =D> =D>

Poo DPD :evil: :evil: :evil:

In my opinion DPD are the best carrier service out there. I normally get a link to change the delivery date/deliver to a neighbor etc. Also they normally give me a one hour window for delivery.

I had all of that.

I've always thought dpd were the best too, so far they've been great for me.

On the other hand I've stopped using ironmongery direct since I realized how over priced they are. Just ordered a load of blum hinges off m and d online and ironmongery direct were around 60% dearer.

I do agree with ironmongery direct being a bit on the pricey side but I really cant fault the service that I have received from them in the past
I've never used M&D on line so I cant comment on how good or bad they are service wise but I have noticed after looking on the site that they are slightly more expensive than going direct to hafele which begs the question Why not just go straight to hafele to order hafele items or am I missing something

Roger

I found the stuff I had from them cheaper than anywhere else, and the service brilliant. I suspect that you can find a % of stock of any given firm more expensive that somewhere else - they all need to make money somewhere. It used to be like it with Screwfix - 85% was cheaper than anywhere else, but boy did you get caned on the other 15%.
As an electrician friend said one day when I queried why he used a supplier that was known to be expensive for certain lines - I deal with them because over a year they're no more expensive that anyone else, there product range and quality is good, and they always have what I order in stock. I can't waste half a working day chasing around to save a couple of quid then find the place I've gone to hasn't got in stock half of what I need.

+ 1 for DPD. As mentioned the option they give to change the date and time makes all the difference.

Ironmongery direct blum hinges and plates £170 m and d Online £90 for the exact same items and delivered before 9 am next day. Not peanuts and in fact way more than the 60% I guessed earlier.

If you can afford to lose £80 on every order you're a better man than me lol

EDIT : just checked both sites for 60 x blum soft close hinges and 60 x fixing plates, I need for a job next week.

I'd = £276 Inc vat and delivery

M&d = £143 Inc vat and delivery

By the way I'm sure I'll still use i/direct for some stuff as there's nothing wrong with their service.

Just priced the drawer runners that arrived today IMD £9.90 for 700mm per pair. I can't find 700mm on the M&D site but the 650mm are £14.27 a pair.

Graham , my point with Phil was what's wrong with a quick shop around. Saying he hasn't got half a day to waste is nonsense. I run my own business and yes I'd love to have one supplier for everything but that's never gonna happen. It takes minutes to google prices not half a day. Also the savings are not peanuts as I've shown.

Everyone knows that shopping around is always going to bring up better prices. The savings you showed were significant, and worth the effort. Sometimes I buy from a supplier I know I can beat on price by a small amount if I shop around, but prefer the convenience and comfort in the knowledge that I won't get let down. Swings and roundabouts, but thanks for the link, I've saved it and will use it.

Me too I've known cheap suppliers that are useless too. These guys were very good when I used them the other week. They were recommended through Twitter from a few highly respected joinery shops.

Just checked prices on blum tandem drawer runners which I also need for the next job.

9x pairs 500mm tandem soft close runners plus locking device.

I'd = £450

Md= £210

It wasn't actually my point, and it was made a few years ago when it wasn't quite so easy to check prices and it was very easy to waste half a day if visiting three or four suppliers. By the bye, it was only an example of a mindset. I'd certainly take time out to check. I wonder also if there was an element of complacency - the costs are passed on, in many cases without their being questioned. At the other end of the spectrum, I wasted the better part of an hour one monday morning (holding up the start of a job) because our boss clamped down on our purchasing, insisting that everything we bought had to priced up first. It was an expensive hour's hold up - I saved him two pence on a tube of caulk. (Done deliberately, of course :) )

When pricing domestic jobs (which is all I do) I use Wickes website for general stuff because I know I can beat their prices if I want to take the trouble, and that if I'm rushing I can use them and will still be in pocket.

I've also found them very helpful but DPD here are totally useless , yes you get an email to say they will deliver tomorrow then you get one in the morningthat gives you thename of the driver and an eta. With me it was 6pm to 7pm to what was plainly a business address so very reluctantly I waited and waited then at 6.30pm iI had a email to say that tthey had tried to deliver but there was no one in with a photo of another building, saying that they would redeliver the next day, now me thinks yes they will do exactly the same at the same time and still there won't be anyone in, nowhere on any of the emails can you contact them to put them straight, but at least I D rang them to complain.

In my experience courier companies' people seem to have the attitude that I am buying the thing that they are delivering for THEIR PERSONAL BENEFIT rather than that they are providing a service.

It's got so bad that I will NOT buy by any form of Mail Order if delivery will be by Courier; if delivery is by Royal Mail Letterpost I know that I can go to the Sorting Office (two minutes away) and pick up the package

I appreciate that the views of others may differ - but I simply go elsewhere rather than risk courier delivery

Wow that's drastic. That will cut down your options by 98% I imagine. I feel your pain but I buy lots of stuff on line and this incident is the first for a while. I feel you may have shot yourself in the foot.

Firstly when buying, I ask if delivery can be by Royal Mail Letterpost rather than courier and the seller is often happy with that.

Secondly, I have, on two occasions, had deliveries made to my DUSTBIN. On one occasion a box containing several hundred pounds worth of computer equipment was put in the dustbin. The dustbin men emptied it before I arrived home. On another occasion, a box of 1000 large envelopes was put in the dustbin. When I upended the bin to remove my package it stank and the seller had to replace the order.

On other occasions, I have discovered boxes thrown over side gate a week or more after delivery.

One courier firm was based on the other side of the town; when I found their card, I rang and said that I would go and pick it up. The woman spent ten minutes telling me why that wasn't convenient. I could have picked up the package and returned home in a shorter time.

On the basis of MY experience, I put Courier companies into the same category as telephone sanetizers and want nothing to do with any of them.

Do you blame me?

Ha ha, nope. You've definitely had a belly full. I've had parcels put in the bin with a note through the door to tell me though. They have a choice of 4 bins and never seem to choose the card/paper bin which is cleanest.
