iphone expertise required....

Hi.... on behalf of a friends daughter....

She has an aging iphone4 which up until yesterday was working just fine.

Went to bed Sunday night with approx 50% battery life. Woke the next morning and it was virtually flat.... 2 or 3 % only.

Put it onto charge and all it did (is still doing), is tries to boot up i.e. the apple logo appears on the screen for a few seconds then disappears. Then repeats every 20 - 30 seconds.

Have tried doing a hard reboot i.e. press and hold Home button and Power buttons together until logo appears.... still no good.

Any apple geeks out there with any ideas please...?

I is no expert, but sounds like the battery has done one.

Can you/she get another battery to try in it.?

I have virtually no expertise re. iPhones, but, having recently replaced the battery on my wife's anvient iPhone 3G, I can tell you that it's not a job to be undertaken lightly. You need a few special tools, small hands and good eyesight. I had the special tools, but not the other requirements.

However, the sympoms do match.

Couple of things; 1/ agree it's likely to be the battery, but 2/ try plugging it into a computer and seeing what happens - if iTunes doesn't come up, it's possible you might have to restore it from a backup. Also try putting the phone into recovery mode - details here. !!NB: All the above assumes the phone's been backed up recently!!

This should at least let you know whether it's worth having the battery replaced; almost exactly the same thing as you describe happened to my Dad's iPhone 4, and unfortunately it was a goner though it had had a hard life...

Thanks Pete..... yes it was backed up just recently as i/we managed to sync it to her itunes account, so we'll try that first.
