Calpol - the Stanley level is pretty good actually - thanks - it can calibrate itself without having a known flat service to hand.
I was torn between the iPhone and the HTC Magic - think I would have been happy with either.
Thanks Neil will check out Runkeeper.
Matt I find the iPhone useable for browsing forums and the occasional post.
Cheers

Hi there,

The G2 is the best phone I've ever used - full stop (and I've used *alot*!). I know one of the attractions for many people to Android is the ability to root it and play with the guts, but that's not for me, I can't afford to brick my new phone and buy a new one purely out of curiosity (not sure what the other benefits of rooting a phone are!).

saving apps to SD... getting updates of future android updates which aint gonna be offically updated on G1 as it don't have the ram i think

There are issues with it of course, but any early adopter accepts that:

The battery life is poor for a mobile phone, but treat it like a pda instead (ie. charge it over night) and it's fine.

The current version of Android on the G2 doesn't support file transfer over Bluetooth, but it's only a matter of time before some smart fellow sorts that out so it's hardly a deal-breaker.

Other than that it is a joy to use, the addition of the trackball is genius, the controls are slick and intuitive - I'm very impressed and very happy (although if I was with Oriange and only had 500mb a month to play with I'd be very unhappy and very poor by now into the bargain!).

Oh and it's layar - that may be why you couldn't find it - it's a separate program to Wikitude, not an add-on.

found layAr... cool...
battery on G1 is the same... have to use it like pda.. i think alot of that is due to playing with the apps etc so damn much...
is it ok without the flip out keyboard... i use mine all the time as the on screen one i find a pain but i dunno if thats cos i got used to the flip out one before the onscreen was added...
i've been on Orange for years til i got this on t-mobile... seems to be good (if not better) coverage where i am... (which strangly is 3miles form an orange call center lol)
glad i have unlimited data tho... but the a wifi button on homescreen sorts me out when in the house...

Does anyone use their iPhone to browse the web? For example, would you browse and participate in this forum using your iPhone or is it too much of a faff?

I have an HTC phone with mobile broadband facility. I use it for checking e-mails etc, but rarely use it access the internet. Too much faff as you say, screen and keyboard too small and, outside of wifi hotspots, far too slow.

That's what I thought. I love the idea but I'm completely intolerant of fiddly and therefore slow and cumbersome interfaces. I touch type so the thought of slowly prodding away at the keyboard sucks the appeal out of the iPhone for me. I've been offered a Nokia 5800 for free so may use that to test the water.

Hi Yo - I did consider the Touch Pro 2 for the keyboard, but the moment I played with a HTC Magic I realised it was un-necessary, the on-screen keyboard on the G2 is absolutely fine.
I didn't realise you couldn't save apps to the sd card, I thought you could. Still, you can back them up onto the sd card and retrieve when necessary, so I don't think that'll cause me too many sleepless nights! :)

Matt, I use the internet on my G2 all the time, I probably spend a couple of hours a day surfing the internet on my phone, very occasionally I encounter a page that makes me wish I was looking at it on a monitor, but to be fair that's a pretty unusual occurence.

iOSMaps - free OS mapping of the whole country - but you need a connection (no caching) and very flakey. 1:50000 maps and 1:10000 (incredible detail).

Gidon, I'm just thinking of dipping my toe into the world of gps/mapping on a mountain bike. Is it something an Ipod Touch, Iphone or similar would do with the right software? The iOSMaps thing, do you just need the connection to download the map or all the time, i.e. to run it?
Any other contenders out there!
Many thanks

Hi John
iOSMaps is no good at the moment becuase it can't cache data - so you'd need a fast connection everywhere you cycled! And it's very unreliable too - even if you have a WiFi connection it sometimes can't connect to the server (the free OS data only seems to support a limited number of connections).
If you just want to track you route there are loads of apps. But if you want to see where you are on the map Routebuddy Atlas is the only thing available with decent mapping - 1:50000 maps are £10 and 1:25000 are £20 - the iPhone app is free. It's slightly limited at the moment but new features are meant to be added soon.
It says it works on the Touch too.
Then you need to attach it to your bike!! I do have an Arkon attachment on my bike but I'm just putting it in a Aquapac bag int my pocket at the moment - can still track my route and see where I am when I stop to take a look.
Or you could get a Windows Mobile device - and buy Memory Map software which is far more developed. I've used this for the last few years before I switched to an iPhone.
For road cycling TomTom / CoPilot software will also do the job.
Cheers

Thanks for that Gidon. It all looks very interesting. I'm toying with the ipod touch because it's so much cheaper than the iphone but then I'd need a seperate phone.....aaaahhhhhhhh too many choices.
Cheers

John, there are quite a few Android apps that do what I think you're after, MyTracks, GPSTracker, Glympse - GPS based apps seem to be a popular choice of project for the app developer! :)

john...

on my G1 i have these... do a search they might be out on iphone etc too..

Everytrail (is on iphone...)

this is quiet good... also does geocaching so pics you take while on your route get added to the correct place on the route...
i am trying others so have only done 2 tests with it but look here to see how it looks...

My Tracks... using atm... not on iphone yet?

GPS tracker from Instamapper. only used once. kept as a backup... can be very accurate but used it while walking so not tried on bike yet...

It's superb, my mate visited last weekend and I got him to send me a 2 hour Glympse before he left so I could track his progress, I could see when he was stuck in traffic and what progress he was making so I knew when to start the food and move the car etc etc. It's due out on the Blackberry too and I'll be glad when it is so I can get my other half to send me a Glympse when she's out with the girls (I do worry).
