Been meaning to watch that for a while - thanks for the impetus.

Kauri is pretty tough - Janka is similar to (non hard) maple and strength comparable to the 'good' spruces and pines. It isn't rot resistant, but I guess that can be managed. Good enough for the mast of a tall ship, so probably ok for a bucket. Native to parts of Australia too, although if anything like New Zealand, not easy to get hold of any more.

Yours was buried anaerobically, which ensures that bacteria (and insects) can't survive and thus the timber is immune from attack and decay. It's nothing to do with the rot resistance of the wood, and everything to do with the rot-free conditions in which it found itself.
 
Love this film.

I'm assuming he runs courses and workshops because he has a natural teaching style and explains everything so well and with ease. Makes me feel like I could go and actually make something round right now!!
