Like the string idea, could be a simple yet brilliant and fuss free approach. Would use something stronger and longer lasting though like para cord or similar (which I just happen to have a big reel of !) so there would be no chance of breakage. Great idea !

Cheers, Paul :D

Errrm. I only had a Philistine on one side of the family. To be honest i'm not sure if i can bring myself to do it. (the hole drilling that is)

Bet you though that if somebody respectable like LN or LV or better still the likes of Hock were to incorporate such a hole 'by design' that before long questions would probably be asked as to why the other guys don't have this feature.

I'd be a bit cautious about string.

How about a simple channel shaped block of ply screwed to your wall board that would slip neatly over the first few inches (distance depending on the type) of the back of the sole when dropped into it? Wouldn't even need to be a channel, just two strips of L section on edge, one on each side.

Plastic moulding anybody? (oops, done it again, haven't I !!!)...

Hi,

How about just welding them to a metal plate

If you want to store a plane upright, then depending on the shape of the plane, make:

A simple upright box sized for the plane, but an inch or so over length. Put a piece of ply across the top, and another across the bottom.

Push the toe of the plane up under the top 'guard', push it back and allow it to settle down behind the bottom plywood 'guard'.

Just like you mount a sliding door. The top 'guard' might need a slot to accommodate the front-tote.

The plane couldn't fall out, unless you dropped it! I've seen planes stored on the heel, and never heard anyone say the casting suffered for it.

Store planes without a projecting toe and heel horizontally.

Or if you only have two planes, as does Mike G, just put them under the bench!

Does that make sense folks?

John :D

Just chuck 'em in the bucket with all the other assorted chisels, used paint brushes, wire brushes and garden trowels etc.

It's in the corner, I can hit that bucket from anywhere in the shop. Dead easy.

Plane storage, from the definitive guide to dovetail making

https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32266&highlight=tutorial

wash your hands and fetch the chamois leather gloves before removing our prize hand-made-by-300-year-old-dwarfs Block Plane from its silk cushion, waft it gently in the vicinity of the corners (but be careful not to leave a trace of dust on the equipment!).....

Clearly I omitted to mention the air-conditioned cabinet, which is an oversight I have regretted ever since.

It's a hopper... Right Mike? :D Compound dovetails on a grand scale.

I'll think of a major use for a hopper around my house one day!

A plant trough springs to mind, but that would involve using treated timber, an unheathy thing to cut into. Unless I can find some decent green oak!

Nice one Mike ! :D

I never posted a picture of the finished thing (s), John. They are planters, four of them, and are now up on legs. They are lined with some old corrugated iron so the soil doesn't make contact with the box.........so treated timber not really necessary. Besides, they look a bit too pristine at the moment. A bit of weathering is called for.

. . . Why not drill a neatly deburred hole at the rear of the sole of each plane, and hang them up by it using a pin screwed into a flat board at a slight upwards angle so they can't slip off? . . .

What a great idea! I've just come back from the workshop after trying this out.

After looking at my old jointer I decided it would actually be best to drill a hole in the toe rather than the rear. Didn't take too long and then it was just a matter of whacking a 4" nail into the tool wall and bending the end up a bit. Works a treat.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best!

What about a revolving carousel ? It could play music as you spin it...

Oh my.

Why do collectors have such a problem with users adapting tools to their working needs?

The only thing that makes this a less than perfect solution is the longterm security of the nail, which is effectively going to get wacked sideways by a lump hummer everytime the plane is hung up.

Collectors squirm in a similar fashion when they hear of a saw with a hang hole in the toe - a truly excellent solution for storage.

Nope, this isn't tongue in cheek. Treating tools like objets d'art makes me nauseous.
Do you prep the face of your plane irons? Makes them fit better with your work style, right? So what the heck's the difference?

Tell me that picture is a Photoshop job...it certainly looks like a Photoshop job...

How CAN anyone damage such a nice piece of wood cladding like that with a NAIL! It's CRIMINAL!!!

:D

If this string idea catches on, I predict endless posts on this forum about the best type of string to use
