ok so i know that it is a lie, but i have to believe it not to be true.

but what i am wondering now is does everybody keep their ln/lv or clifton planes in their packaging, or having built your tool till, where and how do you keep the boxes. :?

do you have a dedicated box store????

paul

Thrown every box away once satisifed with the tool

I buy 'em to use and keep

I'm with Tony on this one.

That's why they're called tools, to differentiate them from ornaments.

I have a shoulder plane and a 405 in their boxes, but only until I improve my storage (OK, the 405 box might stay to keep the bits together.)

All other boxes have been recycled either by myself (a spokeshave box has KD nuts and bolts in it, a #7 box is used as a small offcuts bin) or the council.

Same goes for 'vintage' boxes, I'm afraid. I like to know the tool may have either been well cared for or was just little used, but beyond that the box is just clutter I don't have space for (and I didn't buy the tools as an investment, so when our money grubbing state sells off my estate I really won't care how much more the treasury would have gained but for the box.)

Cheers
Steve

I keep all the boxes of my premium tools - they live in the attic. Just in-case they have to go on Ebay one day.........
Philly :D

I don't throw them away, although I don't consider myself a collector and all the planes were purchased with the intention of being used and are used. The boxes sit shoved on top of some cabinets in the workshop but when I get round to it they will be launched into the loft space on top of the insulation to be effective as more insulation. Mostly just because I can't help myself :) Nothing to do with investment. I am aware there is probably no purpose in me doing it. Therapy probably rquired.

so what you gonna do when you need a roof extension philly???????

mind you must say that the lv boxes are not as good as ln.

paul

Since all of my 9 (at the moment :D )are old once that came without a box except for my no 71. So I do not have many plane boxes. However speaking of boxes in general it really depends on the tool and the box.

Some boxes are very handy to store your tool and all of its accessories in it and the tool is not worth of putting it n a display cabinet with a LED of halogen spot light on it. (ehhrrr I did not type that last bit, no seriously I did not type that :p )

For new the tools that go out of their box, the box goes to the attic for the duration of the warranty on the tool. But mostly that means the box is forgotten about and still there somewhere.

I'm with Philly here, all boxes and info are kept in the loft and I do agree that tools are there to be used but I wonder how much Waka's Norris smoother would be worth if there was no box? You also only have to realize that top quality tools are collectables especially stuff like LN planes and can be handed down to the next generation, what they do with them is their business and if they do decide to sell, the tools will go for much more with the box. Also look at TV programmes like the 'Antiques Road Show' and see how much Dinky toys fetch with the original box, no comparison I know. I think with these sort of quality heirloom tools it's a definite error to ditch the cardboard box, throw it up in the loft - Rob

'fraid I keep nearly all my boxes too, well the proper ones anyway. Not sure if it's worth keeping the pre-production ones  and TPTB swiped the one the bevel-up jointer came in to put wrapping paper in. It's not just madness; f'rinstance the LN saw one came in handy for the Wenzloff's recent excursion to Salisbury. The fact that by the time Paul had done drooling over it I could have done with a waterproof box is neither here nor there... They live on top of the cupboards in the w'shop and I take pride in nesting as many as possible into each other.

It's okay, I'm taking the medication, honest... 8-[

Cheers, Alf
