Well it was my table which seems to have started this thread, so i'll 'fess up now - i'm not making matching chairs. We bought them about a month ago.

I'm willing to undergo some kind of temporary ban for this deviant behaviour

Cheers

Karl

I'd absolutely love to make a chair. I'd absolutely hate to make 8 matching! ;)

Thinking about making a chair for next years college project, nice big chair that Mrs IB can get comfy in and read by the window

I saw some garden furniture in B & Q and I thought I might buy it for the timber. :x

Well this is part of the point I was trying to make.

The wood & other stuff is far more expensive that the finished article unless you can get wood to recycle.

Other than Sheet, I very rarely buy wood.

Zackery.

I dunno how to describe it. It's a sliding dovetail arrangement and the female part of the dovetail has blown out. The table is hideous, so fixing it will be crude, very very crude
One long screw through each outside side of the leg into each rail should do it! ;)

You can always plug the holes to neaten up a bit.

I must admit, when you said creak and crunch I thought you were going to say your back had gone! :D

Sounds like a good deal Lurker - but the cost of the oak would have been considerably less than you might think. I made an american cherry table a short while back for less than £200 and oak is 1/3 of the price of AM cherry.

Of course, when one factors in chairs, and fittings and time........

Myself and Bean are buying some american white oak at present as I have to make 2 'stylish' double beds and he has a few cupboards to make and we are currently looking at £25 per cubic foot for 1 1/4" boards

I have always fancied making a Sam Maloof rocker - only one though as they take up a lot of space!
I was going to make a pair of Steamer Loungers but making just one put me off!! :)

Tony,

What sort of % wastage are you factoring for the current jobs?

Depends on where we finally buy from. If Good Timber, then not much unless it is waney as their wood tends to be very clean and mostly usable. The best quote so far is a woodyard we haven't used yet which means i don't know how much would be waste - but I choose the boards and so can be careful

I once was talked into buying an antique pine tv unit from Ikea, Yes Ikea.
I think she might have drugged me though, I couldn't have been thinking straight. Is this possible?
