Before we go any further I would like to apologise to Travis across the pond for the way his post has been progressively hijacked, what he must think of us I don't know.

Very cheap, not clever and not worthy of a supposed teacher.

Oh, you patronising old fool. As I was once a teacher I am supposed to put up with your drivel without complaining? How does that work? Did you actually think about that particular insult?

I wasn't the one who started posting that other posters were 'village idiots' because they disagreed with your primitive views.

I wasn't the one who was hanging on the coat tails of that guy from Nottingham who got banned for his repulsive posts.

I'm not the one who looks down his nose all the time and makes these scornful posts every time your Daily Express view of the world is challenged.

Get over yourself. You're not as special as you think.

Pay them no heed mate, at the end of the day this is a woodworking forum, you have posted pics, I have posted pics, everyone else who is proud of their efforts have posted pics, why is it all we get from certain folks is comments and "good advice".

But we don't, do we? We get insults and patronising comments from you. This is meant to be like a pub - in the pub I go to making comments like you do would win you a broken nose.

****: Much as your little tantrums are sometimes mildly amusing, do you have to ruin 50%+ of the threads you post on?

Travis: Enjoyed those pictures, bought back some happy memories of trips to the west coast, especially the Yosemite and SF ones.

I don't go out drinking, I stay home with my family, that is after I have cooked the evening meal.

There's no doubt that the USA is home to some of the world's most stunning scenery, both natural and man-made.

But why do you guys always have to wrap it all in such a cloak of cheesy sentimentality?

Probably because they are proud of their country and heritage.

Rich.

Without getting drawn into a slanging match I appear to have inadvertantly initiated, that is not an answer to the question that I asked.

The photos that Travis directed us to are amazing. I very much enjoyed looking at them. If I was American I too would be proud that my country contained such beauty.

The problem is the context in which they are presented. Any right minded intellegent person would be made nauseous by such a tacky and tasteless display of cheese.

This is an example of just why Americans have a largely unfounded but unfortunate reputation around the world as being a people totally lacking in class.

I've just had one trip to the USofA and found the bits I went to really stunning and I intend at some point to have another visit with SWIMBO later on. However, in many of the communities that we drove through, it seemed that every other house had a 'stars and stripes' hanging outside which to a Brit (well, me anyway  ) seemed a bit odd...not something that you see in the UK or the Continent for that matter. I'm not knocking it any way, just curious - Rob

Alot of the American Patriotism which seems strange to us Brits stems from America having a very recent history and its independence from Britain within the last 250 years. Americans are still proud of that struggle and fight and the associated legislature such as the declaration of independence and the constitution. In the UK we have a much longer history as a nation and therefore less association with being British. I suspect that if devolution ever does happen for Scotland there would be alot of Scottish flags on display North of the border, and similarly for Wales. US flags on every other house are a manifestation of this patriotism.

Steve.
