I'm not so sure. I'm no expert on metalworking lathes, but the rear shaft is plain (with a key), and I suspect
it's simply the drive for a powered traverse, via the worm and large gear wheel.
I'm not sure wether the large leadscrew is a true leadscrew for screw cutting, or another power feed, this time longitudinal.
On the versatile lathes used for model engineering, these are commonly a single dual-purpose, screw. But industrial
lathes normally have a "low grade" screw for power feed, and a precision leadscrew for a screw cutting, thus
saving the accuracy of the leadscrew for when it's needed.
This beast, although clearly industrial, has a single screw, and I suspect power feed
was more important than screw cutting on a lathe this size.
