Ideas/tutorial for simple bandsaw box.

As an easter weekend project my partner would like to do some woodworking. I thought a bandsaw box would be fairly straightforward but still leave a usable functional item when done.
Never done it myself bu understand the basic principle of the design. Anyone got any ideas for a an easy to make design that will be good for a supervised beginner?

Oh and my thoughts were to keep costs down and because it is quite likely this will fail the first time, I would glue up some blocks of 2x4 to make the blank. If it does succeed the final project can be painted if required then.

Do you use hand planes?
Have you suitable timber?

I'm making my 1st bandsaw box tomorrow. Glue up was done today, with oak/mahogany/oak/mahogany block.

oak was per my previous posts @ £13/2.4m and the mahogany was a freebie.

any advice on the finish would be helpful. I have BLO and Clear Poly, but would buy anything well recommended.

What you can achieve will depends on how good your bandsaw and blade is, and also your bandsaw skill. For beginner (myself included) avoid sharp turns and you'll be fine.

Adrian had the best one. Designer Woods gave me a lot of inspiration when I started and even has plans that are easy to follow that he sells. http://designer-woods.com/

Once you have made the first couple, it's down to you and your imagination. I like to come up with new ideas, which often dont materialise until after the 'block' has been mad.

An examlpe would be a far larger than usual block that was then cut diagonally as here

Well we just had a crack at it with a sort of tear drop shape. Went quite well, only the bandsaw blade limited us somewhat as it was getting dull so the cuts were not as clean as I had hoped. Partner did superbly for her first go on a bandsaw. The box is only made from glued up offcuts of construction lumber so not terribly pretty but it was perfect for practising as she didn't have to worry about messing it up.
Stained the drawer dark brown and painting the outside of the box in some cream paint that I will wax. Should look nice when it is all done.

Box complete, I think it turned out pretty good for her first go on a bandsaw.

Ha didn't notice that. No not planned at all, this was just made from what was on hand which was a couple of bits of 2x6 c24 offcuts that I glued together. The shape was planned to work around knots.

I'll pass on the messages of encouragement. She did do a large part of the work herself under supervision, I only stepped in to help when something was heading for disaster (not often). The major bulk of the work though was done by her.
