As a beginner I see examples of work done by seasoned scrollers, in this forum and others as well. as an example, pictures of tigers heads, how is that picture done,? whats the technique ? is the parts cut from different woods then applied to a backing board, ? are parts burned ? I'm amazed at the skill, but at a complete loss as to HOW it's done, so come on guys and gals, give me a hint please.

Do you have any examples that you can link to? There is such a variety of differing techniques that can be employed.

HI Zanda,
not sure if this is the tigers head your referencing to by sue (shadylady) from the scrollsaw village forum but its very nice indeed! she does some beautiful work, very talented, segmented relief as she posts...but unfortunately as a newbie myself ....not sure how she does it either???
in the post Sue says that she has another similar project of a Bobcat and i think she's going to do a WIP about it so i'm looking forward to it to see how it comes together myself :D

I've got Neal Moore's Animal Portraits In Wood and its projects are high on my 'to do' list. In a nutshell, Neal cuts the segments, stains them, glues shims to the underside of each segment according to how prominent he wishes it to be, then hot glues the segments in position from the rear. He uses hot glue rather than other types of glue because it doesn't run through the gaps between segments that are left by the saw kerf.

My thanks to all that have replied, it's certainly a very must do on my list.
My own cutting is coming on nicely, I can in the main manage the straight lines and the curves etc, so I'm definately gona be having a go at something very soon, might even post it on here, if nowt else it'll give folks a laugh lol. thanks again peeps :)
