How to use a faceplate

Not being able to wait until I get my chuck -have to wait a couple of weeks as I've spent too much lately, I've been and bought some blanks and want to try a platter or bowl, but I don't know hot to use a faceplate. I can see how a chuck works, but if I screw the blank to the faceplate, how do I avoid the screws, or get rid of the marks. Sorry if this sounds stupid as I'm new to this.
