I had a nasty catch the other day and my bowl gouge ended up bent quite a considerable amount. Imagine holding it out straight with the flute uppermost, then pulling down on the tip with great force - its curved that way. It's an HSS tool (Sorby) and I would like to get it back straight again. Any ideas? I don't want to damage the flute as sharpening might be afftected later.

Personally I'd chuck it.I am not an expert on metallurgy but if it's been bent then it will have been seriously weakened and I wouldn't want to trust that it won't happen again or worse snap. If I am wrong I am sure someone who is more expert in metal things will correct me

dont try to re-bend it as its not worth the risk-contact sorby i'm quietly confident that they might replace it for you, nothing to lose.

That's scary

Might be worth investing in some lessons or friendly tuition from someone nearby, or attending a local club ?

It takes some doing to bend a bowl gouge and suggests you are doing something drastically wrong and might well end up hurting yourself.

At the very least would suggest getting yourself a good book or dvd, but hands on guidance is the best if you can get it.

Cheers, Paul :D

Bin it mate , it is now weakened and if you force it back it will make it worse , If it fails it may break off completely and who knows where it will embed itself

Just had a reply email saying they'll swapit for me! Hurrah
Good news but I think some hands on guidance would still be good, don't want to bend the new one.

I think Dave is right about tuition,
I assume you were using it with the rest too far back thus having too much overhang,
then having a dig in.
I couldn't think of any other way you could bend a HSS bowl gouge.
Still, lessons learned, having it replaced, sounds like a result to me.
