Hi all

I'm a site carpenter and so each night I keep my tools in my van. I'm lucky that I can back my van against walls in my drive to stop it getting broken into.

I have some really nice hand planes and chisels in one of my tool boxes which are getting rusty. Can someone recommend a product that will prevent this from happening?

Best regards, Andrew

If you can pop them in a box that's airtight-ish then you can get some little rust prevention capsules from Axminster, another alternative is to wrap them in rust prevention paper and the last is to give them a wipe over with a light oil each night

Hi Andrew

I'm my day's and when i was jobbing out the back of my van I kept an old ice cream container with a well oiled rag in it end of each day give them all a wipe over , all ready for the next days work .hc

I suspect your planes are rusting due to condensation caused by the cold and your van being quite draught free. You could try putting the planes in to socks. It may be enough to stop the moisture settling on them without being an impractical solution. I would also oil them from time to time.

I give mine a wipe with olive oil after I've used them, otherwise the humidity here rusts them up in no time.

Also, for garden tools like forks and spades, I have a bucket filled with sand and old engine oil. Before I put the tools away each day, I shove them in the bucket. It cleans them up nicely and stops them rusting.

WD40.
Silverglide (a wax mixture, made in .de). Good on cast iron, also reduces friction. Likely be available from any place that sells good tablesaws, planes and such.

I think Matt's right on this one, it's probably the condensation on the tools that's causing the rusticles to form. I think if you were to put them into a reasonably airtight container along with some sort of moisture dispersant as others have indicated, that might do the trick. Martin King of this parish uses moth balls in little tins with holes in the top to protect his kit which seems to work very well - Rob

Hi and thanks for you replies

It is just the planes that are rusting up. I'm gonna try some socks to see what happens. Failing that I'll try the VCI stuff.

I'm pretty lazy and just can see myself oiling them every night. I also should brush my teeth before I go to bed but I often can't be bothered to do that either!!

Cheers, Andrew

  That might end up giving you more trouble than not oiling your planes.......

Cheers

Hi Andrew,

There are plenty of folk like you m'man. One of the reasons I bought shares in Steradent. :D

Of all the solutions, I've found the VCI most convenient - just put a canister - or a piece of the paper - inthe box and forget about it except for remembering to keep the box closed as much as poss to extend the life.
I've never got on with the oily rag system - partly because it can be messy unless the right stuff's used, partly because some items like planes are really fiddly to get into the nooks and crannies of, and mostly of all because I'm a lazy inidivival and can't be arsed.
