Hello,

I've just finished making bench out of 3 old kitchen chairs. As I waved it with rope and then sprayed it I wonder what will be best protection for outdoor use. I will attach the photo of it, so you can see what I am talking about.
Thanks a lot in advance

I've no experience of such a thing... but I happen to have just read an article about how traditional rope fenders for boats are made. If you have used synthetic polyropylene rope, you don't need to do anything. If you used hemp, manilla or cotton rope, the fender maker's approach is to use wood preservative. Rope is vulnerable to the same sort of fungal growths as wood so can be protected in the same way. You'd need to brush or spray it on generously and arrange something to catch the drips.

That said, you might not want to lean up against rope that had been chemically treated, so maybe you'd be better off just bringing your bench indoors in bad weather.

Hi Andy,

Thanks a lot for reply. I will try with spraying as you suggested. I saw that you are in Bristol, do you need extra hand or is it possible to rent a bench in your workshop? I finished cabinet making in Warwickshire college, but I have no workshop here, so I started to recycle old furniture (good example is the photo above). I also did furniture restoration, upholstery, caning, rushing, french polishing etc

I'm strictly an amateur, pleasing myself, with no benches to rent. Sorry!

Best of luck with your work.
