I can remember grinding axes like that in the 60's on scout camp before chopping down trees. Things used to be fun before Nanny State started fretting over us all.
Ther hook is the precursor to the ring tool. Apparently very efficient as long as you use it right ....very unforgiving if you use it wrong. Popular in Scandinavia

Brilliant. I loved watching that.
My Grandad went to Jail in 1926, in the General Strike... and thats from that very same year. Wonderful.

Flat hat, little round glasses, 'grandad collar', waistcoat... just fabulous.

Great to see that clip.
You can't beat a bit of genuine history  :D :D :D

You see it used extensively in southern Germany at craft sites, mostly by east German turners or from countries due east, usually with green or very compliant wood like Lime, Birch etc. I've yet to see them tackling Beech, Oak or the like.

What a fantastic video. My Grandfather was in Quetta which is on the border with Afghanistan in 1926, nothing has change. Apart from the turning.

I wonder if he is using Robert Sorbey tools and that looks like an early model of the Tormek he is sharpening on.

What skill.
