How many times to knock back?

Hi - I've sanded an oak piece down, wiped it with a damp cloth to raise the grain, let it dry, sanded it down again...
How many more times if any should I repeat that? Until the grain stops rising?

Yes, until the grain stops rising. It can take up to eight times but usually three or four.

You can get away with doing it just the one time sometimes, but many do it twice or three times for security.

However many times you do it be sure you only sand off the raised grain, so use a fine-ish paper and a light touch.
