At the moment I have my chisels hanging on the doors of my tool cabinet. And laying around the workshop, piled to drawers and shelves. There is, erm, like too many of them. They get dull just rolling around and I never find what I'm looking for.

Hanging them on the cupboard doors seems to be the best option, but there are only two doors available, one is already reserved for files and screwdrivers.

Any ideas? How to get the biggest amount of chisels hanging on the doors? Other alternatives? I'm already starting to think that I might get the carving chisels to a tool roll as I'm using them only occassionally, but rolls are far too slow for everyday use.

I could perhaps spare another shelf on the cupboard for chisels, but how to put them there so that they would be available right away and I could see the sizes properly?

How do you store your own chisels?

Pekka

I store mine on a tool board on a wall in front of the bench behind a clear plastic shield. If you have loads of chisels a hinged cabinet that folds out from the wall would be a good idea as well. To stop chisels rolling around on the bench some of Alf's octagonal handles are also an excellent idea - Rob

This is my arrangement, works fine, protect's the cutting edges from damage and any way I always slice myself open on unused chisle's left sprawling on the bench

Its not visible in the picture, but I took out little housing's to suit the width and thickness of each chisle.

I don't have a tool board like Jonathan has shown but I have most of my tools on a shelf over my workbench. ( don't have enough tools for a proper board yet...)

I drilled holes near the wall side of the shelf to hold my chisels and screwdrivers. I had to widen out the holes for the wider chisels (another reason to USE the chisels!). It's working out very well and allows for expansion (just drill more holes along the back side of the shelf) for the butt chisels I got for XMas. They also don't take up that much room so the front part of the shelf is still useable (measuring tools, drill bit cases, that sort of thing).

Hope that helps,
Shawn

I don't seem to have a picture of the "chisel doors", but the idea is just tthe same as on the middle door with files and screwdrivers.

Just a birch strip with holes drilled or chiselled to them.

I noted Derek Cohen's chisel cabinet on the Ubeaut forum, http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au ... entid=2584

That seems to make a lot of sense. By using open slots on the tool holders instead of holes the chisels are easier to remove straignt forward instead of lifting them up all the way. On the same time it gives a possibility of interlap the chisels so there would be three rows of chisels on top of each other instead of the two I now have. That also would solve the problem of slicing my fingers on the edge of the topmost chisel. Having the edge behind the other chisel instead of on the top of it would actually be safer.

More ideas?

Pekka,
I don't have too many chisels so they all (well nearly all  ) fit in here

Andy, that's one cute cabinet. But frankly, I would need more something on this style :D

There aren't that many active chisels, but I shouldf be able to get about 20-30 chisels in there even if I dump the carving chisels in a tool roll. And preferaby some free space for expanding a bit.

Pekka

Phil,
no they are not SOSS. I got those from Woodfit

They were a cinch to fit using a dowelling jig to insure correct placement. One of the hinges has since broken and has left me scratching my head for ways of extracting it as they were a very tight fit. At the moment I'm not sure whether I got the alignment wrong or I've used too smaller hinge.

I've done a lot of variations on the theme of this:

Chisels.jpg

...but the exposed blades always bother me.

At the moment they're largely stored like this:

... but it's not exactly easy access.

On a website I've subsequently forgotten (apologies if the owner's reading this) I saw this:

... which appeals to me and I'm wondering if I can incorporate something similar in my perpetually-in-the-planning-stages Tool Storage Vision. In short I've still to reach chisel storage nirvana, but I live in hope. :D

Cheers, Alf

Mine are mounted on both doors of a cabinet. Most times this storage has been fine for me.

I also have some in a similar arrangement on the wall directly behind my bench, which is against a wall.

It's an older picture, some chisels have been swapped out, but the arrangement remains the same.

Take care, Mike

Hey Pekka,

I showed my tool storage here. The only drawback is, I won't be collector :^o or I will have to build another storage for the chisels or whatever handtools to come ](*,)

how many chisels alf ????
you must be a collector

Hi Marc,
Were you going to put a door on the cabinet? It's my favorite cabinet layout of all the pics I've seen, and I'd love to see a more recent picture if there have been any changes.
Best regards,
Andy
P.S. -- edited to add: I just read a thread in the archives where _another_ Andy also asked whether the door had been finished. I guess "Andy" might be an ancient Neanderthal name meaning: "He who would like to see finished tool cabinet"??? :)

Those nice cabinets put my collection ... er selection to shame.. You all Suck!! Now I won't show you mine. So there!

Oh all right then ...

An old picture (the Nooitgedachts on the right are now living with someone else):

And the ones that get most used are kept in a caddy (Berg paring and Witherby butt) or in boxes (re-handled Bergs for dovetails):

My plan is to build caddys that fit into the cabinets so that they can be stored as racks when not in use.

They're not all chisels. Some are gouges. And there aren't any duplicates - chisels are very accumulation-friendly in that respect.

Alf - have to agree here, I always store my chisels like this

chiselsmall.jpg

behind a thin (2mm) piece of acrylic plastic, several occasions I have reached into the tool well to retrieve an item and as my hand lifts upwards it has just scraped the bottom of the blades - not recommended  Not being a co#&£"^r  , these are the only ones I need and use. Anything else I have, though nice to ponder over just takes up valuable space and clutter in my workshop - Rob[/quote]

If you have chisels on the doors, have you ever got them dropping out from the holders? I'm thinking that should there be some sort of a stopper or "claw" which would keep the chisels on the rack even if you slam the door shut.

My tool cabinet is just an old kitchen cupboard and the doors are always on my way. Leftmost door is just where I stand when I should get close to the bench for planing, so I usually either slam the door shut or then hurt my back on the low corner of the door (and then slam it shut, cussing :) ).

I have hurt myself too many times with the door already and would not like to start playing a pincushion (chisel-cushion) as well with all the tools pattering down from the door...

Maybe I should start c*llecting bigger workshops instead of tools?

Pekka

- edit: I noted that many of you have the ferrules counter-sinked to the racks for preventing them to drop away.... Have to think about that. It steals away some of the versatility, but at least it's secure.

I store my chisels in the lovely little case thay came in from Screwfix.

Cheers
Brad
