What kind of wood, what thickness, how would you treat it? So many questions, does anyone know of a good guide?

You have already found a good guide... Here..

As you can imagine thin laminated type wood is no good at all so you need a good solid wood like beech, oak or maple and depending where it will be outside the thickness can alter.
If it's under a shelter it can be quite thin, but remember being thin it may warp over time, and just use a teak oil or outside furniture based oil to protect it.

When making signs \ intarsia for outside use I generally use Western Red Cedar or Douglas Fir plus a good dose of Tung Oil

I have used thick Plywood and a few coats of varnish when producing a painted object this seems to resist weathering
