Nipped into LIDL's yesterday and spotted a hot glue gun. The kit comes with the gun and 3 nozzles, a stand which can also be powered for free had operation, power lead and 2 glue sticks. The gun is rated at 500 watts and takes 4 minutes from cold to become operational. The body and the powered stand is made from hard plastic, and seems to be put together reasonably well. The whole front end gets quite hot and the instructions recommend wearing gloves when changing nozzles, you have to do this when the gun is up to working temp so gloves are essential. I tried joining pieces of scrap wood and after 10 minutes I could not prise them apart. I had no specific need for this device but I have used it for a couple of repairs. I normally steer clear of cheap tools having learnt the hard way but I could not really turn away from this one. The Price £4.95.

I picked up one of these earlier this week to add to my collection ;)!
It's not bad at all for the price - although the cordless operation is a bit suspect and it's fiddly getting it back into its holder once done.
Just as an aside - the gun I mentioned in this thread is now half price at Screwfix. It's really very good and another option if you're after a cheap glue gun (the glue delivery is much better than on the Lidl one).

I've used a glue gun recently for applying some scotia - where I couldn't get my nail gun in and it worked a treat.

Pete - my own view on HGG's is that they are a very useful addition to any workshop where a quick and relatively strong, instant, joint is needed, eg for jig making, experimental or modeling work. They're not a lot of good for proper jointing as the glue line is far too thick, but interestingly, HGG will stick plastics together quite well, (provided everything is reasonably clean) which many adhesives fail to do. I've had the same HGG for about 25 years now and wouldn't be without it. Watch out for the glue when the gun is fully hot and up to temp...it's as hot as boiling water   - Rob
