Hornbeam

Whilst I haven't done so yet, I have some hornbeam earmarked for guitar fretboards - tough, close grain. What's not to love?

From the same board, I'll also have enough to do a back and sides for a ukulele certainly, but possibly a full size acoustic too.....

I've worked Hornbeam a bit, around 20 years ago. I'm still recovering.

I occasionally get some hornbeam, it spalts really nicely. With large black splashes rather than the thin lines in beech. Also it does not go soft as quickly as beech. A lot of hornbeam is coppice timber hence its use in small items and as firewood. Occasional big trees do turn up now and again.
